Increasing the Engagement of Residents
One of the challenges that we are faced with is trying to improve the level of engagement of residents.
We all know, and research confirms that engaging residents as often as possible in meaningful activity improves their quality of life and reduces responsive behaviours. The problem in most facilities is that there simply is not enough staff time available to do this. It takes a lot of time to find an activity, set it up and be with the resident while they do it.
We can help with that.
Popsicles and the Value of Choice
I was recently visiting a facility on a hot day. While I was there the staff came around with a box of popsicles for the residents. The staff member approached each resident, reached into the box and handed them a popsicle. What a nice relief from the heat, and the residents appreciated it.
What I saw was a missed opportunity.
