Our friend Patricia's letter urges us to "Buy Food From Farmers"

and she begins with "When we value the food that we put into our body every day we naturally begin to question its origins.  Like a new and novel idea that somehow erupts into our consciousness we turn it over and hold it up to the light examining it and shaping it until it makes sense to us. This is what many of us are doing when as we weigh the pros and cons of taking the extra steps to get to know your farmers and buy direct from them.
There are many obstacles to buying direct from your farmer including the ever present time challenges, the inconvenience of planning in advance what you are going to need and the inability to purchase all your products in one quick stop at the supermarket. There are also numerous gains to be had from getting your food from farmers you know. Farmers provide you with a connection to your food, what you are eating and to the earth." We were so intrigued with her writing we thought you may be too. Patricia's letter >

Jayme McKillop of Rancho Vignola
Jayme McKillop of Rancho Vignola was the dynamic MC for the 4th annual Iron Chef Competition at the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) coordinated by Andrea of Rosebank Farms.

Every year Andrea brings together professional and amateur chefs to create their most inspiring dishes with some of the finest, local ingredients including secret ingredients not revealed until right before the competition begins!

The 2014 teams were led by Chef Matt Tardiff of BX Bar & Grill; Executive Chef Romeo Oloresisimo from Dine Prestons; Chef David Colombe's; Chef Myles Ferryman (Vernon personal chef) and Chef Nic Barron (Edmonton's Century Grill)!
Kudos to the winning team Romeo Oloresisimo, Brynn Hill and Tyrell Cardinall (right to left top photo) of Kamloops!

A BIG thank you to the 2014 Iron Chef sponsors Rancho Vignola, KISS-FM, Askews Foods, Greencroft Gardens, Heartwood North Farm, Mike Roseman RV and Rosebank Farms. Read more on Jayme's IPE blog post: Rancho’s long weekend ~ the Interior Provincial Exhibition parade
Last month Steve and Andrea attended the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA) workshop on turkey production in Vancouver, Washington. We learned a lot - poultry nutrition from Pennsylvania poultry nutritionist Jeff Mattocks, pasture and forage management from U of Washington extension research scientists and practical lessons in turkey processing by Jonathan and Ellie Coulimore.

APPPA assists both producers and consumers to transact business directly. Realizing that production models must be profitable to be successful, APPPA's interests include processing, packaging, cooking, marketing, and any other topics related to pastured poultry enterprises. Great information on the APPPA website >

We stayed with our friends Vance & Kristin Corum in their converted dairy barn which now serves as both their house and their family estate winery.
Vance & Kristin's home and winery, Vancouver, WA.
