Hi All

Summer is knocking on the door, the days are getting warmer and there are a lot more bikes out and about.  It's a good time to remind all your friends and family to look out for bikes and stay off their phones while driving.

We had a good turnout and lot of fun at the GOPAT event last Saturday.  See further down in the newsletter for photos.

THE RONALD McDONALD FUNDRAISING RIDE

PLEASE make sure you have put Sunday the 13th November on your MUST DO list, Vaughan, with help from Les Duffield & Rob Bissett, has put a lot of work into making this ride a success. Vaughan will be in the lead car and Les will follow up with a trailer in case of accidents or breakdowns.
Welcome to new members;
Noel #8454 & Pip #8455 Sutherland, transferred from Blenheim, Chris Roos #9510, Magriet Roos #9511, Pete Martelletti #9512, Tony Howes #9515, Rosemary Silva #9516 and Brian Flood # 9523,
IMPORTANT NOTICE Our Xmas function will be a Drinks, Dance & Supper evening at the North Shore Squash Club with music supplied by Peter “Fingers” Unstead. Tickets are restricted to Branch members only at $10.00 each for members and partners and available at Club-Night, please bring cash the bar doesn’t carry enough change.

Dale & I travelled down to Lower Hutt for the NatCom/Branch Leaders workshop which was well attended with most branches represented.
Some points from the weekend.

The Health & Safety legislation was discussed, volunteers & unpaid assistants are not affected by the new H&S rules but you should take all care when you are organising a ride etc to keep every-one safe by riding sensibly and not pushing the envelope.

The National Bike Raffle tickets will be on sale in Mid-January as per Internal Affairs licencing rules, you can book a ticket/tickets in advance and pay for them in January. The number of tickets has been increased to 2500 and should only be sold to Ulysses Club members and partners.

The profit from this raffle goes towards RIDER TRAINING so don’t be pig- headed by believing you can’t learn something new or improve your riding. PRO-RIDER Gold, Silver & Bronze Rider Improvement Courses are subsidised by NatCom all you have to do is let us know BEFORE you do the course then show us proof you have the completed the course. Contact Barry Holland (021 753 301) for more info or call PRO-RIDER, 0508 PRORIDER (0508 776 743) for a booking.

The website upgrade is progressing well with the next step being the updating of the Membership Database so you can go in and make changes to your details, this is going to take time as it is quite complex.

There will be some new feminine tops featuring the Ulysses butterfly rather than our logo available shortly.

Committee member Jim Furneaux will be drafting up a resolution giving NatCom control of a defunct branches funds so they will be available should that branch be reformed.

Motorcycle Protective Standards work is being carried out in Australia, Ulysses NZ and BRONZ are represented by the Australian Motorcycle Council on the committee which is looking to have riding gear (other than helmets) tested and given a Star Rating. Some funding is being contributed by our ACC and we will write to the NZ Insurance Council asking for funding, also to the Minister for ACC asking that some of the Motorcycle Safety Levy $$$ be provided in addition to the ACC funds.

Some branches wanted the membership age to drop to 30-35, after much discussion it was pointed out that the club charter is linked to the charter used around the world and cannot be changed, however some branches might resurrect the Telemachus Club within their branch to keep younger prospective members. Telemachus was the son of Odysseus /Ulysses.

Organisation for the 2017 AGM & Rally is going well if you have booked your accommodation don’t forget to send away the entry form, there is nothing worse than trying to organise something when you don’t know how many are coming.

We have been given a Rally Gnome which we have to paint and return to the Wairarapa Branch, the idea is the branch members will dress the same way the gnome is painted. Yeah Right!! Any volunteers to do the painting. Contact me 027 289 1018.

Our guest speaker was Wendy Bond from e-Link Discount Group discussing the new multi-vendor group discount scheme that is being offered to Ulysses members. Wendy will be our guest speaker at November club-night..

The 2018 National AGM & Rally will be in Mosgiel 23/24 March, Warbirds over Wanaka will be the weekend after. Accommodation details will be out shortly.

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES??
To help guide our Club into the future. With people standing down from the National Committee we need nominations for Vice President, Secretary and committee positions. You would need to come to the National AGM to put your case forward and would be expected to attend 6 committee meetings a year including the AGM NatCom Meeting and the NatCom/ Branch Leaders workshop in October.

If you think you would like to be part of the National Committee give Mike Dew (NatPres) 027 283 0235 or Nicky Bright (NatSec) 020 403 79715 a call for more information

Andrew Leader runs the "Twists and Turns" low speed manoeuvring sessions that Ulysses set up some years ago.

They are run on the first Saturday of the month at  Kelston Girls High School, 1 Archibald Rd, Kelston, West Auckland 0602.

All North Harbour members are invited to attend.
It’s a great opportunity to practice all those key low speed skills in a safe, supportive environment.  For instance when did you last practice an emergency stop?  Plenty of skilled riders attend to help with technique and encouragement and they are not judgemental.  Better to practice where there are people to help pick the bike up if you lay it down!
The school entrance is first on your right as you turn off Great North Road into Archibald Road:

Fun in Stratford
Labour weekend 10 of us headed down to Stratford to meet up with Nigel and Donna Scott.  We all met at the Papakura Service Centre (Except Linda who went to the Bombay Service Centre) and headed for Stratford ( Except Linda who headed to Raglan). At this stage we wondered where Linda was but in true Top Gear fashion we just left her behind.

We had a brief stop in Pirongia where we learned that Linda was actually coming and that she was in Raglan.  So we waited in Pirongia for about 45

minutes but we got bored so we decided to move on to Te Kuiti, fuel up, get a bite to eat and wait for Linda there.  Finally she arrived and we all headed down SH 3 through the Awakino Gorge to Mokau where we stopped for Whitebait Fritters and to meet up with Nigel Scott.

Nigel was expecting us at 12 - 12:30 but due to our slight delays we were about an hour and a half late.  We all had something to eat and drink and headed on our way to Stratford and The New Commercial Hotel.  We were very parched by the time we got there so we had to drop our bags and go straight to the bar.

Ian the publican was very accomodating and after a bit of a clean up and a couple of refreshing ales he drove us to Donna and Nigel's who had put on a big spread for us.  We ate, drank, watched the ABs kick Aussie butt at the Scotts before Ian came and picked us up to take us back to the pub.  The band was rocking and there was few new dance moves created before we headed off to bed.

The next day we went for a ride to Whangmomona which some of the Taranaki Ulysses and Taranaki Riders.  The weather was stunning and Whangamomona turned it on for us.  There was a lot of bikes there as well as the Ford Thunderbird Club with some stunning cars.

We stayed there for a couple of hours and then everyone headed off to do there own thing.  We ended up in New Plymouth for a pint before heading back to Stratford for a buffet meal at the New Commercial.

We were all shattered after our ride so it was an early night and off to bed so we could get up and hit the road early Monday morning in an effort to beat the traffic on the Auckland Motorway.

All in all it was a great weekend with good people and we had a lot of laughs.  The weather was stunning as well.  You couldn't ask for more and I'm definitely in for next time.

Check the North Harbour Ulysses Facebook Page for more photos.

Motorcycle Tips and Tricks

YOU DON'T have to have the mechanical know-how of a MotoGP technician to perform simple home-servicing tasks; some decent tools and a little common sense are all you need to keep your bike in tip-top shape.

Ideally, get hold of a workshop manual for your machine for a better understanding of how each task should be carried out. Most will give pictures detailing each part of the process; a good manual will also list the tools you'll need to complete the job.

Like a chef's knives, using quality tools are half the battle to a successful job, so avoid using the underseat toolkit if you can.

Obviously, if you're not 100 per cent comfortable working on your own bike then ask a knowledgeable mate to watch over you.

Chain Tension

Tension and lubrication - often neglected

INCORRECT chain tension can result in premature sprocket and gearbox wear, unsmooth gearshifts, snatchy transmission, hamper your bike's rear suspension travel and reduce the life of your bike's drivechain.

Check your workshop manual for how to adjust your bike's chain to the correct tension. Remember to set the tension with some load on the bike (preferably with someone on it) as the chain will tighten up once a rider's on board.

Refere to the owner's manual for the correct torque settings for each bolt - how much force to use when retightening each bolt. You'll need a torque wrench to do this properly.

Remember to also lubricate the chain while you're at it, as this will help prolong its life.

A Message regarding Accommodation for the National Rally in Masterton over Easter 2017

Hello fellow Ulyssians,
The 2017 National Rally is being held in Masterton, Wairarapa over the Easter weekend.
Local motel accommodation is at a premium at this time so members wishing to attend the rally should book now

* Most on line booking sites will indicate the Motels are full over this period.

* Members should Ring the Motels direct and indicate you are from the Ulysses Club as most (not all) motels are holding rooms for us.

There are a number of conflicting events now being held in Masterton over the Easter Weekend so accommodation is filling fast in Masterton and the the surrounding areas.

Remember - You can always cancel a booking but you can't always make one! ----------- Don't miss out!  :-)

Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision.

I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs...phone rings, but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently, although when I ask their names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know them."

I sometimes stay awake to look out for her cab coming home, but she always comes walking up the drive as I hear the sound of a car leaving, around the corner, as if she has gotten out and walked the rest of the way. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi at all?

I once picked up her cell phone, just to see what time it was. This caused her to go completely berserk. She quickly snatched the phone out of my hand and cursed me hysterically, screaming that I should never touch her personal property, then accused me of trying to spy on her.

Anyway, I have never broached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson Lowrider next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the street around the corner when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my motorcycle that I noticed a small amount of motor oil leaking through the gasket between the rear head and rocker arm cover.

So...is this something I can easily repair myself or do you think I should take it back to the dealer?
