Postdoctoral Research Symposium Winners

The University of Maryland Office of Postdoctoral Affairs proudly announces the winners of the 2019 Postdoctoral Research Symposium, which featured over 100 attendees and 30 poster presentations. 

A big thanks to all of those who contributed to make this a very successful event, including and especially Planning Committee Members Tao Cao (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Mary Chessey (Department of Physics), Katherine Joyner (Fischell Department of Bioengineering), Yun-Ting Kao (Department of Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics), and Navot Naor (Department of Psychology). The annual PRS is an event by postdocs for postdocs and we already started working on next year's iteration! 

Another special thanks goes to the postdocs from the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, who came en masse to the symposium!

2019 National Postdoctoral Survey

Dear Postdocs,
Are you interested in winning a travel award, and in sharing your experiences as a postdoc to a large national postdoc survey?  All responses are anonymous, and participants have a chance to enter a drawing for a $200 travel award to a scientific meeting!
The 2019 National Postdoc Survey was conceived and developed by postdocs to benefit all members of the postdoctoral community, and is a follow-up to our very successful 2016 National Postdoc Survey.  Since 2016, changes in postdoc policies have been implemented, including an increase in the postdoctoral salary levels set by NIH.  An updated survey is needed now in order to capture the current experiences of postdoc fellows and scholars, and inform and equip those who advocate for policy on behalf of postdocs.

In this workshop, we'll focus on how to write a research statement for a faculty position. We'll consider what the research statement should accomplish and how this document fits into a larger application package. If possible, bring a draft or some ideas for your own statement and we'll devote some of the workshop to reviewing drafts.

This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Linda Macri, Director of Academic and Professional Development in the Graduate School.

Owning My Success and Parting with the Imposter Phenomenon
Friday, October 4, 2019 ● 12:00-1:30pm ● 2124 Lee Building

 
Sometimes we may doubt our accomplishments and abilities, feel inadequate, dwell on mistakes, and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud.” This has been described as the Impostor Phenomenon. This workshop will explain what the Impostor Phenomenon is, how it affects us, and offer some practical strategies for how to empower ourselves and reduce these tendencies. After explaining the causes of the Impostor Phenomenon, the facilitator will give suggestions of how to overcome negative self-talk, and peers will have an opportunity to discuss their challenges (1.5 hour).

This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Belinda J. Huang, Senior Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion.

Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning

UMD-CIRTL [Center for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning] is an important resource funded by the Graduate School, open to all UM graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. UMD-CIRTL is part of a national network of nearly 40 universities whose mission is to improve higher education by providing community and resources for the professional development of future academics. UMD-CIRTL’s philosophy is that teaching, like research, is a scholarly activity built on three principles; Teaching-as-Research (TAR): using research to inform teaching and teaching to advance research, Learning Communities: bringing people together for shared learning, discovery, and generation of knowledge, and Learning-Through-Diversity: capitalizing on the rich array of experiences, backgrounds, and skills among students and faculty to enhance the learning of all. UMD-CIRTL works closely with, PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) grant to increase the number of minority students receiving doctoral degrees and entering the STEM professoriate.

Preparing Future Faculty As Change Leaders Toward Inclusive Stem Higher Education

This NSF-supported gathering is designed to foster discussion and networking among future faculty, current faculty, and university leaders focused on improving undergraduate STEM education. In addition, keynotes and plenary speakers will offer their insights followed by interactive panel discussions and workshops.

Forum participants will explore topics such as; preparing future faculty to enhance the success of all students, promoting diversity in STEM through evidence-based pedagogy, and change leadership in undergraduate STEM education.
The event is designed to create significant opportunities for idea exchange, networking, and learning about best practices. The ultimate goal is to enhance the professional development and future work of all participants towards promoting effective teaching and learning of all STEM undergraduates.
The 6th National CIRTL Forum provides an ideal opportunity to promote teaching excellence for future STEM faculty through the active involvement of a diverse range of stakeholders, including:
  • Graduate students and post-docs preparing for academic positions in STEM;
  • Faculty and staff who lead future faculty development initiatives;
  • STEM faculty who train graduate students and postdoctoral scholars;

The University of Pennsylvania has established the Provost’s Fellowship program to encourage a broad spectrum of candidates from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in academia. Elings Prize Fellowships in Science (NEW)
The California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UC Santa Barbara invites applications for the Elings Prize Postdoctoral Fellowships in nanoscience. Eligible research can be in any area of the physical sciences, biology, or engineering. The fellowships provide a salary of $60,000/yr. for two years, along with benefits and research funds. Successful applicants will work with, and receive partial support from CNSI faculty; applications must be coordinated with the relevant faculty supervisor(s). Fellowship recipients must have completed a Ph.D. in science or engineering prior to their arrival at CNSI. Applications are due by October 15, 2019. Find more information here. University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center (NEW)
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is currently accepting applications for the CPRIT TRIUMPH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Translational Cancer Research. This three-year fellowship provides basic, translational, and clinical training and aims to further develop talented PhD or MD/PhDs into successful clinical/translational research scientists. Applications are reviewed quarterly with the next cycle due dates of September 30, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Social Science Research Council Invites Applications for Abe Fellowships
Deadline: October 1, 2019

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) are inviting applications for the annual Abe Fellowship Program competition.

Fellows will receive a minimum of three and a maximum of twelve months of full-time support over a twenty-four-month period for projects demonstrating important contributions to intellectual and/or policy debates and breaking new theoretical or empirical ground. Find more information here.
 

University of Maryland

Teaching and Learning Transformation Center
The Office of Education Abroad (EA) is partnering with The Teaching and Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) at the University of Maryland to hire a Postdoctoral Associate to support the assessment and evaluation of the Education Abroad Program (80%) and support the research agenda at the TLTC (20%). Education Abroad is in the process of conducting a program- and course-level learning outcomes assessment. The postdoc will design an assessment plan aligned with EA’s program learning outcomes to evaluate the courses within the program. After the plan is in place and approved by EA’s leadership, the postdoc will manage data collection and analysis under the direction of the Director of Research at the TLTC.

FIRE Program
The First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) is a hybrid research and education initiative at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) that provides first-year students authentic research experience, broad mentorship and institutional connections that impact academic success, personal resilience, and professional development. It was initiated in 2015 and now impacts more than 600 first-year students annually through the operation of 15+ research groups.
 
The FIRE program is seeking a number of individuals (multiple positions available) to serve as Research Educators (formal title: Assistant Clinical Professor) for new undergraduate research groups to begin in January 2020.
 
FIRE is especially interested in candidates who may have experience and leadership capacities in:
  • Computer Science (especially applied forms of Computer Science that utilize machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented and/or virtual reality, etc)
  • Biology (any form including but not limited to molecular, micro, computational, genetics, ecological, neuroscience, bioinformatics, etc)

Postdoctoral Research Position in Correlates of Immune Protection in Congenital Viral Infections
 
The Mohr lab at the University at Wisconsin-Madison is looking for a highly motivated post-doc to join our team studying antibody responses in congenital viral infections. Our laboratory focuses on the correlates of antibody protection in congenital virus infection using a translational macaque model. We currently have an opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher in an ongoing project that aims to characterize the features of the antibody response during pregnancy and in infancy that correlate with improved virologic outcomes. This project combines standard virologic techniques with bioinformatics.
