This month we want to introduce you to a very special 10th grader, Molly Thompson. Molly is a wonderful person & we're happy to share her story:
"My name is Molly Thompson. I am in 10th grade and I live in Hartland with my wonderful family. I was born with a craniofacial disorder called Pfeiffers Syndrome, which affects the way my bones grow and develop. I have had various medical challenges, such as hearing loss, undergoing a tracheotomy and a VP shunt and many other procedures. Throughout my medical challenges growing up, my friends and family have always supported me. Despite the hardships, I am very much a normal girl. I enjoy drawing, making pottery, reading, spending time with my family and friends, and other activities that teenagers enjoy! I'm also known for my great sense of humor and my ability to make people laugh.
All of my peers in elementary school accepted and loved me me for who I was. During elementary school, I gave presentations to all of my peers and shared my story, my disability, and what daily life is like. At first, I mostly intended just to inform and educate others. However, people were so inspired by my story that I decided to keep sharing!
Once I started middle school, my elementary school hosted its first-ever workshop run by Changing Perspectives and I was invited to be a guest speaker, just as I had always been. It was there that I met Sam Drazin, founder of Changing Perspectives. We hit it off quite well and he invited me to do more work with Changing Perspectives. Of course, I said yes! Since then, I've spoken at four schools and have more speeches planned. My speeches focus on the universal values of empathy, kindness, and acceptance - values that I think everyone should have.
After the presentation, I see the inspired look on the audiences' faces and I know they're getting something out of this. I know that the more work Changing Perspectives does, the more kind and empathetic the next generation will be. That's what makes it worth it. I am proud to work with Changing Perspectives.
