Two remembrance ceremonies set for Griesbach

• Flanders Fields Park Commemoration: Sunday, Nov. 1, 11 am, McCrae Ave.
• Remembrance Day: Wednesday, Nov. 11, 10:30 am Patricia Plaza

This November, we will be honouring the sacrifices of those who have served in our military with not one... but two ceremonies.

Once again, the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony will be taking place at Patricia Plaza (along Griesbach Parade). Hosted by the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, this is one of the most stirring events in Edmonton. We suggest you arrive early as it attracts hundreds.

On November 1st, a ceremony will be held to commemorate Flanders Fields Park. The Village at Griesbach created this stunning tribute to Flanders Fields and the Canadian medical officer (John McCrae) who made it famous with his epic poem of the same name. It is adorned with plaques and features a scarlet poppy garden.

Our neighbours from the Castle Downs Recreation Society have been heavily involved in supporting this project and are helping to host this event. We hope you make it down.

Have a safe Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner.  If you’re new, you may want to know how much candy to buy. We typically hear reports of 80 – 130 kids in most parts of Griesbach. The community is growing… so plan accordingly. (The downside is there is a good chance you’ll have leftover treats to tempt mom and dad).

Secondly, we want the little GriesBoos, GriesGhouls and GriesGoblins to be safe. Here are some tips. (Click to read more...)

Busy Autumn in Griesbach

September and October were busy months in Griesbach. Once again we had another fantastic fall afternoon for the 2015 Shake At The Lake & Art In The Park, which keeps on getting bigger and better. (Click for photos and a full rundown).

We were delighted to have two of our incredible local builders step forward to sponsor this event: Pacesetter Homes and Homes by Avi. We appreciate their ongoing support of this community and all that we do.

This event is a huge undertaking, and would not have been possible without the tireless work of the many volunteers and community partners who helped make it happen. We’d like to thank the following:

Organizing Committee: Jen Horne, Carl Knowler, Bryan Evans, Brad Tilley, Melissa Ferr, Felicia Dewar, Dave Neufeld and Janet Watson.

Our Beer Garden Volunteers: Caitlin Ragsdale, Melody Price, Steve McIssac and Ryan Barlow.

The GCL Board of Directors, with special thanks to: Natalie Hanratty, Henny Lamers, Milena Maria… and Stacy Felkar (representing the Griesbach Playground Committee).

Our amazing volunteers: Julie and Fanny Fortin, Moheb Habib, Yiren Du, Sohee Park, Benny Xing, Brookes Merritt, Corey Gordon, Cindy and Kerris Green, Eliza Barlow, Cheng XU, Kejun Zhu and Joyce David.

Special thanks to Allison Mould and the City of Edmonton, Minister David Eggen, Stacey Dear and Akihiro Ohtake.

We'd also like to thank everyone who helped out with our recent bottle drive. We raised close to $2,500 towards our playground.

An estimated crowd of 300-400 showed up for the unveiling of the Ad Astor Monument at Roundel Lake, honouring RCAF members past, present and future. Click here to learn more.
Do you go "a little nuts" decorating the outside of your home for the holidays? We'd like to reward you for your efforts. Details forthcoming in our next newsletter.

Development Update

  • The Griesbach skyline continues to change. Exterior work is now underway on both the Marriott Hotel and Valour Condominiums.
  • Griesbach Community League expressed our concerns to Canada Lands over the fact so many mature trees were cut down to make room for development along Griesbach Parade towards 97th Street. We're also looking into what appears to be the relaxing of architectural guidelines. We want to be reasonable, yet ensure our community maintains the design standards that make our community unique.
  • We've heard some rumours about potential businesses going in at the commercial space but are still awaiting confirmation. We don't want to share anything until we have our facts correct. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks to a Griesbach resident (and Health Canada worker) for sharing the following: Health Canada is behind a campaign encouraging homeowners across the country to test homes for an odorless gas called radon. If present, it is linked to lung cancer. The good news is it can be measured through an inexpensive test. Learn more at

(Note: this is a nation-wide campaign. There is no specific cause for concern in Griesbach. ed.).

Indoor Soccer & Mini's Underway

We had another successful signup for the indoor soccer season. Griesbach has a full slate of teams between U-6 and U-12, and the Mini's program continues to be a hit among kids and parents.

Thanks to all of the parents and community members who stepped up  as coaches and managers. This program would not be possible without your efforts.
