This photograph is the winner of the EAGE/EFG photo contest 2015. It has been taken in Sarchu, Himachal Pradesh, India in 2012, highlighting the typical braiding of the Tsarap river with unique ‘earth-pillars’ along the river escarpment with higher Himalayas in the background. The Himalayas are cradle to some spectacular geomorphological landscapes. Strong winds and scanty rain in a semi-arid cold climate is known to give rise to such exquisite erosional features.

Welcome to this year's first issue of GeoNews...

...This month we are glad to introduce a new section in our monthly newsletter: One day in Europe. Each month we will visit one of EFG's national membership associations and discover their main activities and challenges. In January we visited Belgium and Luxembourg.
We also invite you to read the interview with EurGeol Anke Penndorf, member of the German Association of Professional Geoscientists (BDG) who shares her professional experiences with us.
And finally we remind you of the open call for abstracts for the 35th IGC that has been extended until 29 February 2016

News from EFG & its members

EFG projects | Participation in three new EU-funded Horizon2020 projects

CHPM2030 - Combined Heat, Power and Metal extraction from ultra-deep ore bodies
CHPM2030 aims to develop a novel and potentially disruptive technology solution that can help satisfy the European needs for energy and strategic metals in a single interlinked process. Working at the frontiers of geothermal resources development, minerals extraction and electro-metallurgy the project aims at converting ultra-deep metallic mineral formations into an “orebody-EGS” that will serve as a basis for the development of a new type of facility for “Combined Heat, Power and Metal extraction” (CHPM). Some of EFG’s membership associations participate in the project as Linked Third Parties through data collection and EFG leads the work package on dissemination.
Kick-off meeting: Miskolc, Hungary, 28-29 January 2016

UNEXMIN: An Autonomous Underwater Explorer for Flooded Mines
13 organisations from 7 countries across Europe are collaborating in an ambitious project to develop a submersible robotic system for surveying and exploration of flooded mines. Some of EFG’s membership associations participate in the project as Linked Third Parties through data collection and EFG supports the work package on dissemination.

Kick-off meeting: Miskolc, Hungary, 17-19 February 2016

MICA: Mineral Intelligence Capacity Analysis
The MICA project brings together experts from a wide range of disciplines in order to ensure that raw materials intelligence (RMI) is collected, collated, stored and made accessible in the most useful way in order to correspond to stakeholder needs.

Kick-off meeting: Kopenhagen, Denmark, 2-4 February 2016

EFG projects | KINDRA: Next 5th of February 2016 the orientation workshop for national experts will be organised in Sevilla, Spain, in the frame of the KINDRA hydrogeology project. This workshop relates to the workpackage “Data collection and processing”. Read more about KINDRA

Call for photos EAGE/EFG Photo Contest 2016 “Geoscientists at work”: After the success of last year, the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and EFG are again jointly organizing the Photo Contest 2016. Once again, the theme will be 'Geoscientists at work'. As in the past year there are four sub-categories:
