Sermon Text:  Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly, from heaven, there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound, the crowd gathered and was bewildered because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us in our native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews, and proselytes, Cretans, and Arabs—in our languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’
Peter Addresses the Crowd But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
“In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
The sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Friendship Sunday School
The Friendship SS class will open on May 23rd.  All are invited to join us as we study God’s word and apply them to our lives.  The first meeting will be an informal meeting to get reacquainted and plan for the first lesson on May 30th.  We will be using an Adam Hamilton study “Words of Life” covering Jesus and the Promises of the Ten Commandments.  The book will cost $16.  If you plan to join our class, let Joe Mayhew (843-235-9303) know so we can order you a book.  God Bless.
JOY Sunday School Class Restart In-Person June 6
We will begin meeting in the JOY classroom on Sunday, June 6 at 10 AM.  Initially, our lessons will continue the series we have been emailing:  Psalms for hope, healing, peace and strength. We will then begin an in-depth study of the Book of Daniel which accurately prophesied more than 2,500 years of world history.  Without his prophecy, we can’t understand Matthew 24–25, Luke 21, Mark 13, or most of the book of Revelation.
We hope to see you on the 6th.  And invite anyone who is not going to Sunday school to join us.
The SPW UMC health team concurs with the CDC announcement May 14, 2021. We recommend these guidelines for gatherings within our church.

     CDC  announcement May 14, 2021

COVID-19 vaccines are effective at protecting you from getting sick. Based on what we know about COVID-19 vaccines, people who have been fully vaccinated can start to do some things that they had stopped doing because of the pandemic.
These recommendations can help you make decisions about daily activities after you are fully vaccinated. They are not intended for healthcare settings.

• Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.

Have You Been Fully Vaccinated?
In general, people are considered fully vaccinated: ±
• 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
• 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine
If you don’t meet these requirements, regardless of your age, you are NOT fully vaccinated.
Keep taking all precautions until you are fully vaccinated.
If you have a condition or are taking medications that weaken your immune system, you may NOT be fully protected even if you are fully vaccinated. Talk to your healthcare provider. Even after vaccination, you may need to continue taking all precautions.

May 2021 Treasurer Update                                         May 20, 2021

e-Giving – More Important Than Ever
We are struggling to get volunteers to take on counter duties following services.  Now that onsite services have resumed, we need volunteers to count cash and checks from the Sunday offering.  If you are willing to volunteer, contact Janet Parsons.
One way to make this easier is to use e-Giving.  Your donations can be automatically deducted from your bank or charged to a credit card account.  e-Giving donations go directly to our bank and are automatically updated in our accounting software.  No need to count or handle money and checks.
If you are not comfortable in setting up and maintaining an online e-Giving account, you can still participate by using an e-Giving authorization form.  Fill it out and turn into the church office.  If you want to stop or modify donations, submit a form to stop or update.  You can get a form from the church office or download from our church website at the online giving page.
Sign up today for e-giving – start by going to web page and clicking “Online Giving” at the top right of the home page.  On the next page you will see a link that provides directions on how to sign up and make your donations.
As always, please feel free to call or email me with questions or to get assistance.  You can reach me at 703-786-0670 (cell).  My home email address is:; Church email address:
