Eagle River High School
February 2019

 PRINCIPAL
TIM HELVEY

Congratulations to the Class of 2019 Honor Graduates.  Nearly a quarter of all ERHS seniors earned this academic distinction by maintaining a seven-semester cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.  Congratulations to these 45 hard working graduates!

Compliments also go to ERHS student Rhiannon Cottle.  She will be starring as Louisa Von Trapp alongside professional actors in Anchorage Concert Association’s presentation of The Sound of Music next month in the Atwood Concert Hall.

Please note that there is a change in the school calendars for the month of February. Students and staff will have Presidents' Day, the 18th, off for the federal holiday, but we will continue to have full days of instruction for the rest of that week.

The district’s Visit Our Schools Month initiative will start on Tuesday February 5th at 9:30am and continue every Tuesday for the month of February.  Please join us on Tuesdays if you have any questions about Eagle River High School.

We will host our annual 8th Grade Information Night on February 26th. If you know any current 8th graders or community members who would like to learn more about our school and our programs, please pass along these opportunities to tour the building and discover more about Eagle River High School.

Counselors are talking with students this month about their 2019-20 course requests, prompting students to think about several important questions: How do I best prepare for what I want to do after high school? How do I continue to challenge myself? How many rigorous classes are too many? What will my homework load look like? How do I strike the right balance between academics and all my other activities?  Parents, I encourage you to talk through these important questions with your student in the coming weeks and contact our curriculum office at 742-2740 if you have any follow up questions or if you would like additional information.

Happy February!
Tim Helvey

Curriculum/Student Services

Our counselors are busy visiting classrooms filled with our juniors in an effort to develop schedules for next school year. Individual appointments will follow with students as we develop these schedules for the 2019-2020 school year.

We currently have students involved in the Extended Semester/Extended School Year program. This 12 day intensive course allows students who failed a core class with a 50-59% the opportunity to improve their grade. We are also expecting that a summer school program will be available at several high schools in Anchorage in late May and early June. Our goal is to encourage students to pass all of their courses, but if they fall behind, to given them options to recover these course.

Our Academic English Learners program will be conducting testing on February 8th and 11th. If your student is in this program and if you have any questions on this testing, please contact Jessica Minguez at minguez_jessica@asdk12.org. Attached is a flyer with additional details.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your students’ academic progress, please contact your students’ counselor or give me a call at 742 2711.

Thank you,

Derek S Hagler
