Eagle River High School
April 2022

 PRINCIPAL
TIM HELVEY

The month of March has been a turning point as Eagle River High School returns to normal after 2 years of Covid-19. ERHS is bustling with activities again! The sun is out, the snow is melting, and masks are off so we can see our students smiling! We were able to have our first school-wide WACKO assembly, and Faculty is gloating about winning the competition for the first time in many years. I was impressed with the way our seniors led the WACKO competition, with band instruments, creative cheers, and great attitudes. Our seniors are now beginning the annual countdown to graduation.  We are happy to have a new graduation venue for the ceremony this year at the Alaska Airline Center at UAA.  Graduation is Thursday, May 12th, at 7:00 pm.

Please join me this month in congratulating one of our outstanding Eagle River High School teachers, Col. Scott Brokaw.  Col. Brokaw was recently recognized at the Excellence in Education Awards Dinner sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, and CER Foundation.  The annual award celebrates the contributions of educators in our community, all whom are making a significant impact in the daily lives of students and in their schools. Please see Col. Brokaw’s letter of recommendation in the sidebar.

Our April Newsletter is traditionally the last newsletter of the school year, so I’d like to highlight other ways we communicate to keep parents and students informed and active in our school. The primary source of information is our ERHS website, https://www.asdk12.org/eagleriverhigh . On our website, you will find daily student announcements, event calendars, bell schedules, sport contact information and much more. We also have created an ERHS Information Guide in hopes of helping parents navigate more easily as we continue to have more online learning.

I look forward to all of the usual spring events at ERHS as we celebrate your students.  The dates for all of the activities are listed in the sidebar calendar. Please encourage your child to finish the busy spring season strong, all the way through to finals.   .

Congratulations to the 233 students earning ERHS Academic Awards in February!
See the full list of Academic Awards here
Students are requested to bring their device to school every day, charged and ready to go. Extra CBs were previously available for students to borrow for the day, but due to damage and problems with them not being returned, we will no longer loan extra CBs to students.

Curriculum/Student Services

During the week of March 28, we conducted the AK Star Language Arts and Math Standardized Testing for our 9th graders and conducted the Peaks Science Testing for our 10th graders.  These tests serve as one benchmark or progress check for our students and should be looked at in combination with other data points such as grades, attendance and Map scores when determining how successful your student is at Eagle River High School.

At this point, we are busy working on the master schedule for the 2022-23 school year.  All students have had the opportunity to request classes for next school year through StudentConnect.  If there are any questions about course offerings, or about which specific classes your student should take, then please contact your student’s counselor.

For our seniors, the last week of school will be May 2nd – 6th.  On May 4th, seniors will take a final in period 5. On May 5th, they will take finals in periods 4 and 6.  On May 6th, they will take their finals in periods 1, 2 and 3 and will then proceed to the gymnasium for graduation practice.  The ERHS graduation will occur on May 12th at 7pm at the Alaska Airlines Center on the UAA campus.  See you then!
