Eagle River High School
August 2022

 PRINCIPAL
TIM HELVEY

Welcome back to the 2022-23 school year!  I hope you all have been enjoying a full and wonderful summer thus far. I'm looking forward to a fresh, new school year at Eagle River High School, where our students can thrive and get back to a sense of normalcy. We’re just days away from being back in the building together, so this special back-to-school edition of our newsletter includes all the information you’ll need to get students registered and ready for the first day of school.

Points of Interest for families:
  • Registration is online for all returning students.  New-to-district students should also register online, and are invited to join us at the August 11th New Student Orientation.
  • August 8th:  Class schedules viewable to students and families on Student/ParentConnect
  • School starts August 18th at 7:30am
  • Full 6 class schedule from August 18-August 26
  • Block Schedule begins August 29th
  • Masks are optional on campus.
  • Locker use is required for all students. No backpacks in classrooms or stored in the hallways.

A word about our new bell schedule:
Last fall, ERHS teachers were engaged in a series of PLC's (professional learning communities) focused on how to best assist students when they struggle.  One of the PLC groups identified the need for more flexible time within the school day and more supervised time for students to complete assignments and school business.  Because I am in full support of our teachers’ request, there will be changes to the daily bell schedule for the 2022-23 school year.

Our Friday schedule of six, 45-minute periods, will now include a 45-minute SLC (student learning community) in conjunction with their 1st period class. The focused SLC time will allow students to work on assignments, make up missing quizzes, or get individualized help from a teacher. It will also be a time for teachers to monitor student progress and make time for school business.

The time allotted for the SLC period was created by changing another component of our daily bell schedule: passing time. All passing periods will now be the same length (6 minutes) regardless of the day, providing more consistency in our daily schedule.

We all look forward to seeing the ERHS halls and classrooms full of students on August 18th.  Until then, enjoy your remaining days of summer break!

Curriculum/Student Services

We are excited to welcome all our new and returning students to Eagle River High School for the 2022-23 school year!

On Monday, August 8th, class schedules will be viewable to students and parents through their Q Student/Parent Connect accounts.

Schedule changes will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those in classes already completed or for students in the incorrect level course.  The schedule change request form is available here and on the ERHS website under the counseling tab.  Our goal is to have all change requests completed prior to the first day of school.

We certainly understand that each new school year brings excitement as well as apprehension about transitions and changes.  We are working diligently to make sure schedules are complete, correctly aligned, and hope to honor as many requests as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your academic counselor.  As always, Go Wolves!

Activities

I am honored to be working as the Activities Assistant Principal here at Eagle River High School. As an educator, I worked in the school district as a substitute teacher, head coach, and classroom teacher before my position at Eagle River High School. A born and raised Alaskan, I am an East High and the University of Alaska Anchorage graduate. I played volleyball and was later a graduated assistant coach for the University of Alaska Anchorage while earning my first master’s degree in teaching. I also hold an undergraduate degree in natural science and an M.Ed. in leadership.

As a resident of the lovely Eagle River community, I am committed to establishing and strengthening relationships with our school, community, coaches, and student-athletes. I am excited to work with all of you this year. “All-IN” Let’s go, Wolves!
