Eagle River High School
February 2022

We are all looking forward to Spring and sunshine as we move into February! As the darkness turns into daylight it may become harder for students, parents, teachers and principals to focus at school. Thanks for helping us finish the second semester strong!

We have understandably seen a rise in absences this year, due to illness, positive Covid-19 tests, and other influences. It is important for students to communicate with their teachers via email about their absences, and Canvas provides easy access to teacher emails. Teachers may have up to 30 students absent per day, and the communication helps them provide opportunities through Canvas for students to stay caught up in class.
Spring Parent Teacher conferences for Middle School and High School have been canceled this year.  If you have concerns about your student that weren’t addressed during Fall Conferences, please be sure to contact those teachers.  All staff emails are found on the ERHS website. The bell schedule will follow a normal week Feb.14-17, but there will be no school on Friday Feb 18, which is a teacher in-service day. Elementary Spring Conferences will occur as scheduled on the district school calendar.
Counselors are talking with students this month about their 2022-2023 course requests, prompting students to think about several important questions: How do I best prepare for what I want to do after high school? How do I continue to challenge myself? How many rigorous classes are too many? What will my homework load look like? How do I strike the right balance between academics and all my other activities?  Parents, I encourage you to talk through these important questions with your student in the coming weeks, and contact our curriculum office at 742-2740 if you have any follow up questions, or if you would like additional information.

This year’s School Climate & Connectedness Survey window is now open until March 25th.  The survey gives an opportunity for us to view how Eagle River High is performing in a number of areas through a "parental lens".  Please take the time to help us improve our school. The link is provided below to take this important survey.
On March 16th, we will host our annual 8th Grade Information Night.  If you know any current 8th graders or community members who would like to learn more about our school and our programs, please pass along this opportunity to tour the building and discover more about Eagle River High School.

Class Schedule for 2022-23 School Year
Although we just started second semester, it is already time to start working on the master schedule for next school year.  Counselors met individually with our Incoming Seniors (Class of 2023) last week and the 2 week course request window opened on January 24th for this group of students.  Below is the complete list of course request windows.  For our Incoming Juniors and Sophomores, the counseling team will visit language arts classrooms and review scheduling information.  We will also communicate this information in email form to parents and students once these windows open.
Incoming Seniors: January 24 - February 4
Incoming Juniors: February 7 - 17
Incoming Sophomores: February 22 - March 3
Incoming Freshmen: March 14 - 25
 Attendance Matters
As we have moved through the challenges of education over the past 2 years, one of our greatest concerns is providing a high quality educational product while dealing with higher than normal student absences.  Our ASD Data Dashboard shows a trend at ERHS and across the district where absenteeism has dramatically increased, especially since we returned to school in January.  While there are many reasons that our students are out of the building, I encourage all students who are healthy and able to be present; to attend school each and every day.  Our teachers strive to provide content in Canvas, but there is no substitute for actually attending face to face each day with the high quality educators here at Eagle River High School.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s counselor or to the ERHS Curriculum Office at 907 742 2740.

8th Grade Night is tentatively set for March 16th from 6:00-8 pm. If you have an incoming 9th grader, you’ll want to come to meet/greet Administrators, Counselors, Department Heads, and check out all the Activities (clubs and sports) ERHS has to offer! Building tours will be provided, and the ERHS Spirit Store will be open.
