The decision to deploy military trainers to Iraq was the big item on Parliaments agenda this past week. Our military personnel will take part in a non-combat, behind the wire, mission to train the Iraqi Security Forces so they are in a better position to fight ISIL. This military deployment of around 140 personnel is part of our overall contribution to the international coalition of around 62 countries that are helping in various ways to fight this brutal and inhumane group. ISIL poses a significant and growing threat, both globally, and to New Zealand’s national security. Disturbingly the brutality of the group has only worsened over recent months. The military deployment will likely take place in May and will be for a two year period, with a review by Cabinet after nine months. We’ve already provided $14.5 million in aid to the region so far and we’ll also be stepping up our diplomatic efforts to counter ISIL.

Clinics open for 2015
In the last election the New Plymouth electorate boundary changed to now include the township of Opunake, which is a fantastic community to be involved with. I will be starting monthly clinics in Opunake to give the opportunity for any of the local community or businesses to book a time to discuss issues and opportunities for the area.  The Waitara Clinics will also be restarting in March. To book a time call my office on 759 1363.

BDO Business Expo
I attended the BDO Business Expo in New Plymouth last night, and what a fantastic turn out of local businesses.  Minister Steven Joyce delivered a speech for the evenings event, where he highlighted  how the country was doing economically. He acknowledged that Taranaki was facing challenges in the dairying and petroleum sectors presently getting low prices for their commodities internationally.  However, New Plymouth continues to have a diverse range of local businesses that are working nationally and internationally and exceling in their fields.  It is great that BDO support local business by running these conferences, and New Plymouth has much to be proud of.

Jobfest 2015
Last weekend I attended Jobfest 2015, sponsored by Manukau Institute of Technology. At this expo, employers had stands where they talked about their job prospects and what it takes to join their company. Over 2,000 young people turned up over the day with over 300 jobs on offer. Not everyone was looking for a job – some just wanted to know what was available and what courses and training they need to undertake to join that workforce. A great initiative for youth employment.

Ultrafast Broadband in Waitara
The Government recently announced an extension to the UFB (Ultra-fast Broadband) programme by extending funding to an additional 200,000 New Zealanders. Certain towns around New Zealand have been indentified as potential areas to receive this next roll out, and Waitara is one of those. Click here for National Party's policy on UFB.
Waitara is a growing business community with a number of firms trading nationally and internationally. The ability for those businesses, and the Waitara community to connect to UFB fibre would be a real plus, with UFB a major key to driving business productivity and growth. It’s also a big help for the health, community and education sectors too.
I have been speaking with members of the local business community and it’s clear that Waitara’s eager to get on board with UFB fibre.

I am currently working on a strong case for Waitara to secure funding as part of the Government’s extension to its UFB programme and this includes collecting letters of support from businesses and community.  If you are a business in Waitara and want to discuss UFB or be involved in our submission process please contact my office here or call 759 1363
