Welcome:
Welcome back to UGA. Over the summer over 30 undergraduate student veterans attended transfer orientation, and almost all took the initiative to sign up for a Faculty/Staff Transition Coach; easing their transition into the university.
This Fall, for the first time, we’ll also be offering all of our student veterans and their spouses free access to a professional Career Coach through a pilot program with PIVITU; potentially easing their transition out of the university and into a career/graduate school. We’ll talk more about this pilot program in the next newsletter.
This is an exciting time to be at UGA. On behalf of the Dean of Students, the SVRC staff and our Student Veterans Association partners, welcome!
SVRC Awards and Scholarships:
The application window to compete for SVRC Awards and Scholarships is now open. Thanks to the generous contributions from our community partners, we anticipate having almost $10,000 available, which translates into nearly twenty $500 individual awards.
To make the application process easier, this year you only have to submit a single on-line application to apply for all awards and scholarships. A community-based board of faculty, staff and veterans will review the applications and match the best qualified to each individual offering.
- NOTE: The deadline for applying is September 7th at midnight. Questions contact svrc@uga.edu
Suits4Vets:
Again this year, members of the Athens and Reynolds Lake Oconee Community have donated high-quality suits and accessories for our student veterans.
- Men: Visit the SVRC (Tate Rm 481) to check out the selection of over 30 suits/jackets (sizes 40-44), shirts, pants and shoes; some still with the original price tag on them. Additionally, the Reynolds Veterans Association has donated two $75 vouchers for tailoring and/or accessories.
- Women: Visit the SVRC to register for up to five vouchers of $75 each to upgrade your Fall wardrobe. These vouchers are also generously provided by the men and women of the Reynolds Veterans Association.
Please stop by between 10 August and 22 August get what you need prior to the Fall Career and Internship Fair.
Specialized Tutoring for Intro Math:
Again this year, Professor Kelly Black has volunteered to tutor walk-in student veterans on Mondays from 1115 – 1205 beginning 15 August in the SVRC. Dr Black’s hands-on style proved invaluable last year for veterans taking introductory math classes to include pre-calculus and calculus.
For those who can’t make these sessions, the Math Department offers walk-in hours as does the Academic Enhancement Center.
Part-Time Job Fair:
The Career Center is hosting a Fall Part-time Student Employment Jobs Fair on August 17, 2016 in the Tate Grand Hall from 11:00-3:00. The fair is a one-stop shop for hundreds of positions available both on and off campus.
If you haven’t already taken the time to have your resume reviewed by the Career Center and/or the SVRC, please do so as soon as possible.
Undergraduate Leadership Opportunity:
We’re excited to announce a unique leadership opportunity for undergraduates during the 2016-2017 year. The Office of the Dean of Students is seeking one undergraduate student to sit on the Student Technology Fee Advisory Committee (STFAC). Student members are full, voting members of the STFAC. Student input and feedback regarding the uses of STF funds is vital to maintaining a transparent open process at the University for receiving, reviewing and responding to requests for technology related funds. As such, attendance is mandatory at the six meetings planned for the academic year. Click here for meeting schedule.
If interested, please email svrc@uga.edu, or stop by our office to sign up. All names must be submitted by email or in person by August 17, 2016.
