Alberta Orff Message - President's Message

Welcome back to another new school year!  We are excited to share with you the events that are coming up for the 2016-17 year!

The Alberta Orff Chapter hopes to see you at one of our many upcoming events, whether it be our Make & Take, our Stay & Play, or our October 1st workshop with Heather Nail.  The Make & Take and Stay & Play are members-only events so make sure your membership is current before registering!  Online registration is available for all these events and make sure to check out the subscription option to attend all 3 fabulous workshops this year for a reduced cost!

Full-time Undergraduate University Students can come to our workshops for FREE!  Our Chapter would also like to offer FREE workshops for all the music teachers from Fort McMurray this 2016-17 year!

Please note that the locations for the Heather Nail and Thom Borden workshops are at Elizabeth Finch School. Our third workshop will be a Children's Day workshop that will be held at the Winspear on Monday, April 24, 2017. The location for the Make & Take and Stay & Play will be held at Crawford Plains School.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on October 1st at the Heather Nail workshop. There will be a summary of the proposed changes to the bylaws found on our website (under the Resources tab) regarding position name changes and responsibilities. If you have any questions regarding these proposed changes to the bylaws prior to the general meeting, feel free to contact me at and I would be happy to answer them.

We have a fantastic library...feel free to browse our Library Catalogue here for your resource needs!  Here are a couple of our latest additions:

What to Teach When, Grades 4 - 5
Whether you are a new music educator or a seasoned veteran, you will never again have to ask What to Teach When. Following their elemental approach, this easy-to-adopt curriculum from master teachers Don Dupont and Brian Hiller targets developmentally appropriate skills that every fourth and fifth grade student should master in the areas of melody, rhythm, form, timbre, and texture. All visuals and manipulatives needed to teach the lessons are available on the included CD, prepared for you in full color.

Simply Beginning
Activities to Begin for Music Classes Grades K - 6

Simply Beginning is filled with activities and suggestions for beginning each new type of activity in the school year.  You'll have a lesson to begin your soprano recorder class, and introduction to Alto Recorder, some great new begin-the-year activities, and more.

Check out our latest blog about the amazing Levels Courses offered in the summer. It just may inspire you to take the course next year!  We also have an active Facebook page you should 'like', and follow our twitter page as well!

We look forward to seeing you at our amazing events this 2016-17 year!

Alberta Orff Chapter is here to save the day on those dreaded days where you wake up feeling awful but still need to create sub plans. Come join us in creating your own sub tub filled with games that your students are sure to enjoy and learn something from too. Included in this year's Make-and-Take are six games for both division one and division two that will address rhythmic concepts, tempo, dynamics, instrument names, and composers. Easy to leave for your students to do in small groups with a substitute or for a substitute to bring into a music classroom if needed. These games can be played many times so you'll never have to worry about emergency plans again!

October 1st - Get "Orff" to a Great Start...with Heather Nail!

Start the year “Orff” with a bang! This workshop will inspire with a wide variety of kid tested, kid approved material, and give your students something to be excited about! Foster children’s natural desire to play and learn with quality pieces that will develop their musicality and literacy. Through playful exploration, participants will speak, move, play and sing, balancing musical self discovery and creativity with FUN!
