From the Executive Director

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

As the calendar year winds down, I've been motivated to reflect on the past year. And one thing stands out for me and that is this community's continued support of the mission of Villa Therese Catholic Clinic. I am grateful for your generosity of spirit and faith, generosity of volunteerism and, yes, generosity of financial donations! Thank you. To the staff and Board of Directors, my passion for the clinic is fueled by your dedication and tireless efforts for the clinic. Thank you. To our health care volunteers, we are grateful for your steadfast willingness to serve our patients with quality health and dental care. You are an example for us all.

Since the last newsletter, we've received a $10,000 grant from the Santa Fe Community Foundation during its 2016 Fall Grants Cycle, a $5,000 award from the Doris Goodwin Walbridge Foundation and a $1,500 grant from the Santa Maria de la Paz Peace and Justice Committee for operational support in providing health care services to economically challenged, uninsured or undocumented immigrant children and families. We are grateful to have these foundations and the SMDLP community as partners in our ministry.

I spoke at Unitarian Universalist Santa Fe on November 6th and am very appreciative of the opportunity to share about the important work we do at the clinic, as well as the congregation's generosity of an $815.00 donation. This is a good time to remind our readers that if your church, civic or community organization would like to learn more about the mission of Villa Therese Catholic Clinic, please email me and I can arrange for a speaker to come to a service or meeting.

Hotel Santa Fe was the place to be on December 2nd for our annual fundraiser. It's a great time to celebrate the clinic and to raise funds to continue its mission of providing free health care to those in need. With the experienced leadership of Cynthia Lackner, the event's chairperson, over $23,000 was raised that night! Thank you to the members of her committee Daniel Slavin and Ron Aldrich as well as volunteers Debra Beeson, Ellie Blossom, Cathy Catanach, Karen Gahr, Michael Lackner, Therese Martinez, Margie Montoya, Olivia and Steve Newfield, Pauline Romanik, Melissa Segura and Margie Sullivan for a very successful evening! Below is a list of our sponsors for the evening and the silent auction donors. Please patronize these wonderful supporters.

A Day of Service at VTCC

N.A.L.S. Volunteer Week 2016

The clinic was lucky to have a team of volunteers from the Rancho Carrera Apartments and Talavera Apartments arrive with toolboxes, rakes and shovels on November 16. The work crew was made up of office and maintenance staffs from the two apartment facilities which are part of the N.A.L.S. Apartment Homes company. The chores included patching parts of the clinic's roof and replacing a stack cover; plastering cracks and water damage in two rooms; raking, mowing, pulling weeds and trimming bushes in the side courtyard; and preparation of the ground for hardscaping along the outside courtyard wall.

Volunteers in alphabetical order included: Marlene Armijo, Steve Bustamante, Ana Diaz, Jackie Ellvinger, Sabrina Flores, Sheila Gallegos, Edwina Garcia, Michael Garcia, Michelle Gonzales, Miguel Herrera, Rebecca Lujan, Mario Perez Vasquez, and Edgar Robles. Great job, team! And thanks a million!

A Tree for Tillie

Honoring a Committed Volunteer

During the service day, Tillie Garcia's family planted a tree in her honor. Placed in the side courtyard, the Alberta Spruce is a living reminder of Tillie who often volunteered at the clinic--a place she loved just as we loved her! Tillie passed away last March.

Tillie would want us to remember all our clinic volunteers. She knew it took many dedicated people throughout the almost 80 years since the Sisters of Charity started the clinic to make it what it is today!
