Summer Reflections

In the education business, summer is a time for reflection. So in that spirit, I wanted to share some of our current work, as well as possibilities for future work directions.
You know many of our current projects. Through blogs and newsletters, we've shared some of our recent work on the undergraduate level projects Ocean Tracks: College Edition and Pathways to Big Data Careers, high school-focused Innovate Oregon, middle school-level Real World, Real Science, and our Data Literacy Workshop.

But we also wanted to share a few plans for future work directions. We're participating in a workshop for 250 middle and 500 high school students in Nova Scotia focused on data literacy, technology and entrepreneurship. We're also working with the Ocean Observing Initiative to see how their data could be used in a classroom setting, and conversations have begun with the Community College Research Initiative about building activities around their data produced through in-house research activities. In addition, we are focusing on teaching data at the elementary level in a proposal with the American Geosciences Institute.
Interest in data literacy is growing, as is the sense of urgency around providing these skills to students at all levels. It seems like every week we are talking with new prospective partners, coming to us with new, exciting opportunities to explore. If you would like to keep up with the work we are doing, please check out our blog, follow us on Twitter, or like our new Facebook page!
