Mission Minute

“Do not forget to thank God for his many blessings.”
–St. John Baptist de La Salle

As we look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday next week and enter a season of gratitude, I am focused on the goodness of this community and this school year. Some recent highlights include:
  • Our Heroic Vow assembly this past Wednesday when we honored our Lasallian heritage, Educator of the Year, Matt Owen '10, and celebrated our seniors as they took their own Heroic Vow—committing to being Big Brothers and Sisters to the younger students in our building.
  • Our Christmas Drive kick-off as we look forward to partnering with many families in our community to provide gifts and support for the holidays.
  • The transition from fall to winter activities and athletics and the excitement around all of this.
  • All the adults in our community who support our students through team dinners, grad-night fundraisers, intermission concessions at the play, admissions events, kitchen volunteers, Boosters….and the list goes on.
I continue to feel grateful for the day-to-day as well—the joy in the hallways, the laughter at lunchtime, and the continued work around teaching and learning.

We pray in gratitude for all these blessings and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

Live Jesus in Our Hearts,

Alanna O’Brien
Principal

Community Events

Help Bring Some Christmas Cheer

La Salle parents, we are still seeking donations to the Yulefest Wine Wall. To donate, please drop off bottles of wine in the Main Office. The retail value of each bottle of wine must be at least $20. Higher-value wines are welcomed as well! Thank you for your participation; it's a fun and easy way to give back.

We also invite our community members to buy a pull or two from the Yulefest Wine Wall, where they will receive a surprise bottle of wine wrapped in holiday paper worth at least $20; but often much more! (You do not need to be present to participate in this aspect of the event.)

NOTE: Students may not walk the bottles in—adults 21+ must bring them into the office.

Questions? Please contact Michelle Crimmins.

Yulefest Raffle Still Available

Thanks to your unwavering generosity and excitement, Yulefest & Winetasting is going to be hit! Although tickets are no longer on sale, we still welcome our community to participate in other ways!

Don't miss the Wine Pull or the Wine Basket Raffle, which has two baskets full of wine and wine tastings valued at more than $400 each. You do not have to be present in order to partake in either event. Visit the Yulefest webpage to learn more!

Questions? Contact Michelle Crimmins.

Volunteer Opportunities

CASE Training

All volunteers are required to attend in-person training for Creating a Safe Environment, also known as CASE. CASE training is usually held in the evenings; dates are scheduled periodically during the school year.

(Please note: CASE has replaced Called to Protect so even if you have already taken Called to Protect, you will need to attend an in-person CASE session.)

Upcoming training dates for the 2022-23 school year:
Monday, November 28th at 5:30 PM, Room 507 Saalfeld Center

Other CASE training locations

Email Jennifer Reeves to register or to notify us if you have attended training at a different location.

Assistance Needed: Kitchen Staff

The kitchen staff would really appreciate a volunteer for Mondays and Wednesdays. Adult family members of students can earn $6 in credit plus a free lunch for each shift they volunteer to prep food or clean in the kitchen 11:30 am - 2 pm on school days. The free lunch must be consumed the same day of the shift; the credit will be applied to a student's account. If interested in volunteering in the cafeteria, please visit our Volunteer Page or contact Jennifer Reeves.

The following days and times are needed:
Mondays; 11:45AM-1:30PM
Wednesday 11:15AM-1:30PM

Volunteer for Yulefest!—A Fun Event No Matter How You Attend!

Our annual Yulefest celebration is right around the corner. It requires the effort of many in our community - staff, students, alumni, and parent volunteers. It takes a village to set up the gym, hallways and to clean up. We also need assistance on the evening of the event to staff the Wine Wall and sell raffle tickets, work Will Call and, yes, help pour wine for the wineries! We can’t do this without you!

Wreath Pick Up Volunteers Needed

Looking to give some holiday cheer? There is still time to sign up for distribution volunteering! Now that our Wreath Sale is in the books, we are in need of help distributing wreaths for pickup.

Internship Opportunities

OHSU has an internship program for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior high school students interested in pursuing careers in medicine or biomedical research through a 16-week course starting February 1st through May 17th, 2023 from 6-8 PM. Students are introduced to the scientific process and gain access to research scientists from OHSU and other Portland research initiatives. Students will meet for two hours on Wednesdays for a lecture series and learn about ongoing research projects. A researcher will mentor each student. Each student gains first-hand knowledge of research methods, and, with their mentor's help, will present a published research article in a journal club format and develop their own research proposal.

You can find more information here. Applications for the 2023 program are open now and close on Friday, December 16th, 2022.
