This year’s theme is “There is a place for you to volunteer” or “he wahi mohou hei tuao” which highlights the diversity of volunteer opportunities, volunteers themselves, and the impacts of volunteering.

Volunteering is one of the best ways to meet new people and get involved in your new community. Contact Volunteer Nelson for a wide variety of volunteering oprtunities. Suite 6, Level 1, Alma House, 83A Buxton Square PH: 5467681

World Refugee Week
Many of our newcomers to Nelson have come from Refugee backgrounds.

World Refugee Day is held annually throughout the world on the 20th of June. On this day or week we acknowledge and reflect on the courage of millions of people who are forced to flee their home lands. We also celebrate the contribution former refugees make to our community in terms of our local economy and cultural diversity.

Join us as we celebrate World Refugee Week. Check out It's On for event information.

New Zealand Newcomers Network Hui
I was fortunate to join the New Zealand Newcomers Network Hui in May where I met most of the other coordinators. Did you know that there are over 30 newcomers networks throughout New Zealand? We are a little special here in Nelson though, as this is one of the places where the newcomers network idea started.

The hui provided me with a chance to find out how other areas run their networks and share ideas about activities and events. It was a fun two days and I came back buzzing with new energy. I was reminded of the importance of the work we do, helping to reduce social isolation through our informal social network.

Multicultural Social Seniors
The Multicultural Social Seniors group have a lot of fun on Friday mornings at Victory Community Centre, on this particular day  playing a variety of games. If the smiles and shrieks of laughter was anything to go by, I can tell you they were all having a marvellous time together.

This social group is for all cultures to meet, play games, have a cup of tea and chat, social walking and light exercise. DAY, DATE & TIME: Fridays 24th APR to 3rd JULY 10am - 11am COST: Gold Coin. NOTE: for more info contact Katie 021 047 9636 Facilitators: Damienne & Sylv

2nd Nelson Newcomers Walking Group
The Tuesday walking group has been super popular and ever growing. It has been wonderful to hear that so many people are enjoying the social walks with the coffee afterwards. Because of it's success, we have decided to start up a second walking group. Thanks to Karen Lee for volunteering her time to coordinate this group.

From now on there will be 2 walks per week:
1) on Monday 10 am – dogs are welcome
2) on Tuesday 10 am  - no dogs please

Everyone is free to chose the walks, can go either, or can mix and match, or even go on both of them, whatever suits best.
