COUNTRY REGIONALS

The NSW Country Regional Meets were held in Narromine, Tuggeranong and Woy Woy on 25th-26th January 2020. Well done to all those who were assessed as competent over the weekend.

Thank you to all Officials involved in the smooth running of the meets and for making the TSC representatives feel most welcome.

SNSW REFEREE COURSE

Thank you to everyone who submitted an application for the Swimming NSW inaugural Referee Course. As there were more applications than positions, TSC members closely examined candidate’s applications with respect to the essential and desirable criteria

The aim of the Course is to educate and develop 20 Technical Officials to become Referees by the end of 2020.

The Course commenced with a Webinar on 22 January and covered topics such as Duties and Powers, Protocol, Planning and Preparation. The Course will run until November, with the aim to have candidates complete their Level 1 Referee Assessment.

The normal Accreditation process will still occur outside of this Course – it is not a requirement to complete this Course to become a Referee.

The Course will be led by a Course Manager who will host either a Webinar or face to face sessions every 6-8 weeks throughout the year will candidates to complete course work between these sessions. The Course will also feature guest presenters on specific topics of expertise, include a detailed curriculum specifically aimed at preparing the candidates to be competent Referees and how to source a Mentor.

THE QUIZ
October quiz answer
October question: You have been appointed JOS 4 for the Long Course Qualifying Meet. In the first heat of the Girls All Age 50m Breaststroke, you notice that during the backward arm pull the elbows of the swimmer in Lane 7 do not remain under the water. What do you do?

Answer: The relevant Rule is SW 7.3 – “The hands shall be pushed forward together from the breast on, under or over the water. The elbows shall be under water except for the final stroke before the turn, during the turn and for the final stroke at the finish.”

The intent is that the requirement for the elbows to remain under water applies only to the recovery (forward) portion of the arm stroke and not the backward pull (in the Training Notes section of this page).

Therefore, in this case, the JOS should do nothing as the competitor is swimming legally.
February question
What do Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly finishes have in common, other than to touch the wall?
