  • Workshop theme: “Beneath the waves: Energy transfer from the open ocean to the coast”.
  • Workshop goals:
    • Explore recent advances in using wave information to assess sediment transport.
    • Share & discuss lessons learned and scenarios encountered that relate to waves, tides, storm surge, and nearshore currents.
    • Provide a forum for scientists, engineers, and managers to explore the issues relevant to waves.

Through the Lens of Ecology: Marine Mammals in the Salish Sea, Misty MacDuffee
BC's coastal waters are known for the presence of remarkable marine mammals. Our relationship with these creatures, however, has not always been so appreciative. Can the ghosts of our past actions and the increasing stress we place on marine waters like the Salish Sea, be overcome to ensure a future where all can thrive? Join Misty MacDuffee from the Raincoast Conservation Foundation for a discussion on the ecology of marine mammals in the Salish Sea, the pressures on their environment and survival, and the efforts of Raincoast and others to mitigate the hazards they face.

Sidney Family Day Weekend - A Lego Brick Festival. Events throughout Sidney, British Columbia – Feb 7-9
  • This year's festival theme is marine! The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre (9811 Seaport Place), Sidney BC, oceandiscovery.ca) will host a variety of Lego activities—mixing science, engineering, art and more—all weekend long! Challenges include "create a creature" and "build a boat" (we'll test it's ability to float!).
SeaWeb Seafood Summit. New Orleans, Louisiana – Feb. 9-11
  • The SeaWeb Seafood Summit brings together global representatives from the seafood industry with leaders from the conservation community, academia, government, and the media for in-depth discussions, presentations, and networking around the issue of sustainable seafood. 2015 Environmental Connection Conference. Portland, Oregon – Feb. 15-18
  • What is Environmental Connection? This is International Erosion Control Association (IECA)'s premier educational event for the erosion, sediment control and stormwater industry. Environmental Connectioncombines intense, full and half day training courses with topic-focused technical sessions and the largest expo of its kind. Environmental Connection 2015 will be a co-located event with the Industrial Fabrics Association International's Geosynthetics 2015.   • In partnership with Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), Canadian Network for Ocean Education (CaNOE), and Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME), the Royal BC Museum welcomes teachers of grades 6-8 into galleries and collection areas. This Professional Development day will focus on Ocean Literacy, and provide ideas for integrating ocean related content into museum visits and in the classroom. FREE.
