2014 Annual General Meeting

This year’s AGM will be on Sunday 30th November, followed by a pot luck dinner.

More details will be on the website soon and emailed to the primary member of all current memberships.  This is an extremely important meeting and all members should endeavor to be there.  Please show your support and attend to ensure you have your say on matters important to the club!

As always we are looking for keen, proactive people to join the committee, if you are interested and are wishing to get involved in the future of the club, please contact

Disconnection of Lodge Phones

With most people now having mobile phones the need for a phone line at both the National Park and Mountain lodges have diminished. With this in mind we are having the phones in both lodges disconnected on the 10th October 2014.

With our focus on reducing costs this will also result in a monthly saving of over $100.

Impromptu Theme Nights

This year we have been lucky to have two couples from the Downhill Ski Club arrange Impromptu Theme Nights – Paddy and Kate started the ball rolling with a “Pot Luck Dinner” which was a total success and Keiran and Birget just this weekend been held a “Hamtastic” night which of course was FANTASTIC!.
The club fully backs these events and anyone wishing to put something together is encouraged to contact our booking officer Dion Cruse who will happily email all those booked in to get the word out there.  These events so far have been arranged with only a couple of days’ notice,  and those attending have embrace the good times!
From NO Snow to TOO MUCH Snow !

We have certainly experienced a wide range of weather, from NO Snow, to SO Much Snow, with one Friday evening at National Park the snow was so heavy it sounded like Hail on the roof   and Bernie being Bernie just had to venture out and ‘stand in it’.  Everyone woke to a blanket of snow everywhere with the snow continuing to fall throughout the day and of course, there were snow fights all round.
What has been going on up top?

We experienced a 'Frost' (Kevin & Heather Frost) in the kitchen the night of the Mid-Winter where a menu of fine food was served and devoured by all those that made their way up the mountain.
A massive thank-you goes out to Kevin for the menu and all your helpers that made the Mid-Winter the usual success as it always is.  The top lodge is all about contributing and getting involved and we encourage all members that haven’t experience the top lodge to take advantage of the event nights and see it for yourself – we hope to see you all up there next season!
What a beautiful sight!

It is not all about skiing in the National Park.  These CRAZY (love-able) critters decided it would be a great idea to head up to the mountain tops in winter WITHOUT SKIS ???

The Tongariro Crossing is certainly beautiful during the winter as shown in these amazing photos taken during a trip Hazel Phillip's arranged this season.

It is not a walk to be done in winter by the inexperienced , however it is certainly something to keep in mind if mountaineering is also a passion of yours.
Thai, Indian and more! – HOT HOT!

Every year the bar gets higher and higher, and although extremely hard to judge because the quality across the board was so high, the winner on the night had to be Thai Red Duck Curry that would equal any curry you would find in Thailand – Outstanding work!
This years’ Curry Night at National Park by far produced some of the best curries the four walls of the lodge has seen and every year it just keeps getting better - put this event on your calendar early for next year!
Well, it certainly has been a great season with some real blue bird days, conditions we were not expecting (for better and worse), a season spent catching up with members we haven’t seen since the previous year, amazing food shared with a top bunch of people, new experiences, lots of laughter and new friends made.
The Downhill Ski Club is a great place to ski, board, hike, relax and sometimes play up and it is all possible because of its amazing members – it’s the members that make the Downhill Ski Club what it is - a very, very special place to be.

Don't worry if you haven't had chance to get down to the club yet, there is still snow on the mountain so get your booking in :-)

That's all from me, until next time, have FUN and ski/board HARD!
