Celebrating Diversity in the Profession

RIBA Role Models
  • The RIBA Role Model Project features messages from 12 architects that encourage others who may share one or more aspects of their identity – such as gender, background, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or education – that architecture could be a profession where they might thrive.
  • AIA LA created a map to highlight the work of African-American architects in Los Angeles. Reinforcing the importance of mentorship, the researchers found that many designers were influenced by Paul Revere Williams, the first African-American to join the AIA and the 2017 AIA Gold Medal recipient.
  • From January 26 to April 1, the New York Center for Architecture hosts the exhibition Say It Loud: Distinguished Black Designers of NYCOBA | NOMA, which features work by members of the NY chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects.

Activist Architecture

Architecture Month Poster
With the new US administration in place, it seems that every news cycle brings more headlines about how policy changes might impact us. We considered rounding up announcements like "Trump proposes eliminating The National Endowment for the Arts" but decided instead to highlight Next City's e-book The Urbanist Protester.

This collection of thoughtful essays illustrates how architecture and design organizations can be proactive in this new political climate. Of particular note is "Up from the Basement: The Artist and the Making of the Just City" by Theaster Gates, on how his work relates to existing systems of power.

Download the e-book and sign up for more news from Next City.
