Friends' Choice Award Given
Willow Martin, FOL First Vice President and Habitat Co-Chair, received the 2022 Friends' Choice Award for Oakton Library last month in a ceremony at Kings Park Branch. Established in 2008, the award honors the hard work, dedication and continued service of FCPL Friends members and allows each Friends group to annually spotlight a particular member(s).
Willow has impacted the Oakton Library in many positive ways. She first became involved with the FOL in 2015 as a garden and book sale volunteer. In 2016 and 2017 she served as Second Vice President and during her tenure gathered historical materials related to the founding and opening of Oakton Library. She created informative display boards for the 10th Anniversary celebration that were a focal point during our recent 15th Anniversary celebration as well.
After many years working as a volunteer in the Oakton Library gardens, Willow rejoined the FOL Board as Habitat Chair in 2020. She has since expanded the gardens, shifting the focus to native plants, and this year organized a very successful children's planting program. She leads the twice-yearly habitat workdays and monitors the health and tidiness of the gardens.
Willow has also been an extremely valuable addition to our Friends team, not only because of her endless energy and enthusiasm, but also because she brings important knowledge to the table. Her legal background is very helpful in Board discussions and decision making. Meanwhile, her botanical and pollinator knowledge, founded upon study in those areas, have made the grounds of Oakton Library a source of education and enjoyment for patrons of all ages.

FCPL Indie Author Day November 5
Each year, libraries and readers honor the achievements of independent writers by celebrating Indie Author Day. Indie writers self-publish and they are eager to connect with readers in their communities to share their stories. This year, FCPL regional libraries are hosting local indie authors as well as writing workshops for all ages on Saturday, November 5, from 1:30-3 p.m. at these three branches closest to Oakton:
Centreville is hosting a Writer's Workshop for Kids (Ages 7-16); Reston has slated a "Book Review by You!" workshop (Ages 16+); and Tysons-Pimmit is hosting "Find and Replace - Editing Secrets" (Adults). Workshops require registration and space is limited. The branch links above include registration information. No registration is necessary to meet the authors. Also, Chantilly Regional Library is opening Sunday, November 6, from 1-2:30 p.m. for a special event, "Writers of Chantilly: Meet the Authors" with no registration required.

Fall Cean-Up At the Library

The Fall Clean-up was held on Saturday, October 15th. During the clean-up, volunteers cut back plants, mulched garden beds, and removed invasive plants from the woods behind the Library. Thanks to all who helped!
