Welcoming the stranger: working with global communities, locally.

Friendship and Citizenship
One of the greatest joys that of the work we do is getting to connect people in friendship. We love it when we get to hear how the friendship has grown, has impacted both people and how God is brings healing through a relationship. Last year we had the privilege of connecting a man from the Middle East (we will call Adil) with an American born friend (we will call Andrew) here in Boise. At the point of the meeting Adil had been in the U.S. for many years, in various towns and somehow landed in Boise. He is single and experienced trauma prior to coming to the U.S. as well as during the time he has been here in the U.S. It has been very difficult for him to trust and to build relationships with others. Andrew knew this going into the relationship and has been very patient, accepting Adil where he is, asking him to do things that might stretch him a bit but always leaving it up to Adil to make the decision whether to go or not. One of the biggest roadblocks for Adil was getting his American Citizenship. With Citizenship comes the opportunity to travel so he can see his family who were left behind and who he has not seen in many, many years. But because of his trauma and health, it was hoped that he would get a waiver for taking the Citizenship test. This needs a doctor's referral and is not easily given. Adil's first attempt was submitted without adequate guidance or support and he was denied the waiver. Andrew asked Glocal about resources and places that could help. We were able to refer them to IRC who then was able to take Adil carefully through the application process. We are so thankful because a few weeks ago Adil was sworn in as a Citizen of the U.S. and Andrew was present at the ceremony. It was a huge answer to many prayers and the hope is that Adil will see God's hand in this situation. Please keep them in your prayers as Andrew continues to walk in friendship with Adil.
