Welcoming the stranger: working with global communities, locally.
"...when did we see you a stranger and welcome you in? Truly, i say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me." Matthew 25:38, 40
World Refugee Day and Other Updates
June was a great month. We loved getting to be a part of World Refugee Day. So many people stopped by and learned about Glocal and the many other organizations working with people who have come as refugees to the Treasure Valley. It is always an honor to be a part of this day and to see the great support of many people in Boise.
The next day Glocal was able to help with World Refugee Sunday at Faith Community Bible Church. It was a vibrant service full of God's love for the stranger. We were blessed by a local Karen Choir helping lead some of the worship and by Pastor Soda from a local Karen church telling his story and encouraging those who were there. The whole service was tremendous testimony of God's deep love and care for the vulnerable. Praise the Lord and thank you to FCBC for this wonderful opportunity.
As far as other programs going on with Glocal, the garden is in full swing. If you live in Boise, you definitely should take a look at the Glocal Garden on Maple Grove and Ustick. It's gone from a dusty, dirty looking garden in May, to a full, green, producing garden in July! Our gardeners are the best!
It's also been a fruitful year in Boise for many of our families as we have held about 16 Baby Showers so far this year. Michelle has about 6 more on the docket for the remaining of the year. The showers are a lot of fun and over and over again we hear what a blessing they are to the families who are receiving the gifts (all donated by wonderful people like you). Having a time to pray for the families and for the sweet babies has become a special blessing at the showers.
Friendship Partner Opportunities: One Child and a Single Father Family: We are looking for a friend partner for a young boy, 9 y.o. to help tutor and to do things with on the weekends. His mother is often housebound and the father travels a lot. They live in West Boise.
The other family needing a partner is a Single Dad with 5 children. Again the children need some activities, especially during the summer months to help engage them and keep them active. The father works nights. They live near the Whitewater Park area.
Email Laura if you are interested.
English Teachers Needed:
August/September is just around the corner and English classes will be starting again. Our Glocal English Class on Thursday will be looking for Drivers to help getting the ladies to and from class. They are already asking when we will start again!
Also there are English Classes offered at Garfield Elementary School, on Broadway Ave. The past two years The Language Lab ran the program but this year, some members of Bridgepoint Church have agreed to run the program. They are looking for teachers for Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 starting the last week of September. If you are interested, please call Merric at (540) 846-4160.
As mentioned above the Baby Shower program has been busy. Michelle says she is always in need of Diapers: Size Newborn and 1. Also cash donations to buy pack and plays and strollers are also appreciated as those are the big ticket items. If wanting to donate cash, you can do so below through the donate button. Drop down to Glocal Community Partners and in the memo write Baby Showers.
