EFG Projects | INFACT newsletter II

The Horizon2020 INFACT project is developing and testing sustainable minerals exploration technologies with the active engagement of stakeholders. For this purpose, flight campaigns took place in the Finnish and German reference regions last summer. The project has recently issued its second newsletter which informs about these data acquisition details.
At a glance:

  • INFACT is now in project month 14 (total duration: 36 months);
  • 27 deliverables have already been submitted to the EU;
  • The INFACT Campaign 2018 posts series by Geophysicist Dr. Joan Marie Blanco has been covering the data acquisition campaign in Finland, Germany and Spain.

You can read the newsletter here and subscribe for future editions at the following link.

EFG Projects | INTERMIN survey on mineral raw materials training programmes

Since February 2018, EFG participates in the INTERMIN project which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. One significant part of this project is to make an inventory of all the post-graduate training programmes in the field of raw-materials engineering that are available (not just in the EU but worldwide). In order to facilitate this task, the project team has prepared an electronic survey.
Based on this survey and a thorough assessment of the future technological development and prospective shortages of specific skills, the project will identify possible gaps and build on this, preparing the community (not just the partners of the project-consortium) for the future.
We would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes of your time and complete the survey which can be accessed at the following link. Participation in the survey takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Philipp Hartlieb from Montanuniversitaet Leoben ( who compiled the survey.

European Environment Agency: “Why should we care about floodplains?”
“Rivers are much wider than the channels we associate them with. The areas next to rivers, which are only covered by water during floods, are also part of the river system. Known as floodplains, in their natural condition they are an important ecological part of this system: they filter and store water, secure both natural flood protection and the healthy functioning of river ecosystems, and help sustain the high biological diversity present there.” Read more

EFG Panel of Experts on Soil Protection contributes to CONAMA18
At the occasion of the 14th edition of the Spanish National Congress on the Environment (CONAMA), María J. Rubial, the coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Soil Protection, has presented, on 26 November 2018, the work conducted by the Technical Committee on “Business and Biodiversity”.
CONAMA is the benchmark for dialogue on environmental policy and innovation in Spain. The four-day event hosts a series of activities, conferences, financing workshops, stands and networking spaces for thousands of attendees ranging from company representatives, civil society organisations, scientists, ecologists, politicians, institutions to entrepreneurs.
According to María J. Rubial, “it has been a pleasure to be able to participate in this group that highlights the importance of soil as a critical resource to stop biodiversity loss. We must not forget that this is a natural asset that supports our biodiversity and that provides us with essential services which protection and restoration are now at the top of the EU’s political agenda.“ Read more
