October 2017
PRINCIPAL MARTY LANG

We are quickly wrapping up the 1st academic quarter of the year.  Quarter grades will be viewable in Parent Connect on Tuesday, October 24th, just prior to high school parent conferences which take place on Wednesday, October 25th.  Fall conferences provide a great opportunity to sit down one-on-one with each of your student’s teachers to ask how you can best support your student’s learning in that class.  I hope to see you there. For specific times and details, click here.

New starts and major transitions can be tough.  I know the first few months can feel especially challenging for students who recently relocated in a military-related move or who otherwise started this school year in a brand new building.  In the face of that challenge, it has been a joy to watch the anxious faces of students melt into smiles and laughter over the first six weeks of the year as our new-to-ERHS students find their rightful place in our community of wolves.  There are so many ways to get involved in high school—from fine arts to athletics to clubs and competitions.  I hope your student is already finding his or her niche.  If not, I encourage all new students to visit our activities office to explore what opportunities might pique their interest.   Previous studies have shown over and over that students who get involved beyond their academic day average higher grades, better attendance, significantly lower drop-out rates, and a stronger, more positive connection with their school than their peers who choose not to get involved.  It can take a little time to find one’s place in a new community, yet the rewards are far-reaching and long lasting for those who do, which is something I want for all our students.

I know I speak for all our staff when I say we will be thinking about the 2000+ troops in the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division as they deploy to Afghanistan this fall to serve our country and support the Afghan national forces.  To many, these men and women are brave soldiers.  For many of our students, these same men and women are simply mom and dad.  At Eagle River High School we feel an especially close connection with this deployment.  As you all strive to do your best on behalf of our country, please know that we are committed to doing what we do best—providing an engaging environment for your student to learn and grow, coupled with the support and caring of our teachers and staff.  Thank you so much for your service; we all await your safe return.
Happy October!

NCAA Information:
Is your student a junior or senior considering athletics at the collegiate level? Any student who has even the slightest interest in collegiate-level athletics should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center – preferably at the beginning of their junior year of high school. This is required of students who have interest in NCAA-governed athletic programs.
To get more information about NCAA eligibility, go to  https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/

SPORTS and ACTIVITIES
Thank you to athletes, coaches and parents for a fantastic Fall sports season!  Tennis, football, flag football, and cross country running are wrapping up their seasons with volleyball shortly thereafter.

Sign ups for Winter sports have started.  Please make sure to check the ERHS website for all necessary paperwork, fees and information on sports physicals:
http://eagleriverhigh.asdk12.org/activities/athletics/

A reminder to our freshmen athletes:  Incoming freshmen are deemed eligible during the first quarter, however ALL students are expected to maintain grades at the end of 1st Quarter.  Students who lose grade eligibility will be notified and pulled off of teams.  1st Quarter ends  Oct. 20th.

ZANGLE and GRADES
It’s easy to stay connected with your Zangle Parent Connect and see your student’s progress at ERHS.  It is never too early to be in communication with your child’s teacher and make sure that we all support your child academically.  If you have any questions regarding a specific grade or missing assignments, please contact your child’s teacher.  Teachers’ names are hyperlinked in both the Parent Connect and Student Connect, making it easy to click on the teacher’s name and send an email.

Students also have the ability to go online and access their grades through Zangle Student Connect.  This helps students stay on track and see their individual progress just like Parent Connect.  It is important for students to be accountable for their progress and know where they are standing in each of their classes.  Please encourage your child to use this useful tool to build on their success at school.  With both parents and students having access to this information, great conversations can be held at home.

Please allow time for teachers to grade assignments and tests.  Don’t expect that the grades will be posted on the same day the assignments are due.  If it appears that your child’s information has not been updated within the last two weeks, feel free to contact the teacher.  Keep in mind though, even in the fast-paced world of the Internet, quality grading and feedback still take time.

Curriculum

Greetings from the Curriculum Office:

The end of September and the month of October are busy times at Eagle River High School.  PEAKS results were released and first quarter marks were made available to parents on September 25th.  There are also several upcoming events and dates about which students and parents should be aware.

Please see the links to the right of this newsletter as well as the Counseling Newsletter from Mr. Rollman for more information about upcoming tests, college and academy information, and other academic information throughout the month of October.

Although it has been mentioned elsewhere, we encourage students to monitor and reflect on their academic progress throughout the semester. The best method for doing so is to log into Q Student Connection.  Parents also have access to their students’ information and can log into Parent Connection to track grades.  Please be aware that Parent Connect will transition to Q Parent Connect next month. More information will be forthcoming.

Finally, although there may seem to be limitless opportunities and too many tasks to accomplish in the time we have to spend on them,  I think it is wise to consider how much time we have to invest and how much time we need to stay connected, centered and healthy.  This often starts with those around us. On that note, I’d like to end with a quote from David Brooks’ book, The Road to Character,

"Start your work from where you live, with the small concrete needs right around you. Help ease tension in your workplace. Help feed the person right in front of you. We each have a deep personal obligation to live simply, to look after the needs of our brothers and sisters, and to share in the happiness and misery they are suffering."

As we get closer to the end of the quarter and life’s inevitable rush, take time to take care of yourself and those around you.

Onward!

Assistant Principal
