Eagle River High School
April/May 2018
PRINCIPAL MARTY LANG

Dear Parents:

For the last seven years I have taken great pride in serving as the principal of Eagle River High School. I am proud of the work my staff and I have done to create a safe and inviting community for our students.  I am proud of our reputation for academic excellence.  And I respect the rich, wide-ranging, and diverse perspectives our students bring to our school community every day.  This is a special place.  That makes this letter all the more bittersweet for me. Last week I announced to my staff that I have accepted a new position as the Director of Secondary Education in the district office for next year.   While I am personally excited about the prospect of a new professional challenge supporting secondary principals across our district, it is with great sadness that I end my tenure as the principal of ERHS.  I will miss this school.  I will miss working with this amazing staff.  I will miss tremendously my interactions with the students here on a daily basis.

I want to take a moment to thank the parents, coaches, school business partners, JBER leadership, and community members who have helped shape ERHS into the amazing school it has become today.  I know this work will continue long after I am gone, but I want to personally thank everyone for the support you have shown me the last seven years.  Leading a school community is a great privilege and a great responsibility, which has been made all the more special because I had the honor of serving alongside all of you.

The process for selecting the next principal to lead Eagle River High School has already begun.  A site selection committee is forming to develop a list of critical attributes everyone would like to see in the next principal.  A survey is also being developed to help collect input.  We will email the survey directly to parents in the coming days and post it to our website for any community members who would like to fill it out. I hope you will lend your voice to this process.  The new principal will most likely be named before the end of this school year and will officially start work in July.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the selection process.
It has been a pleasure serving this school and this community.

Curriculum

Greetings from the Curriculum Office:

Finishing Strong. The sunshine has returned, temperatures are steadily rising, and school is a busy place. As such, it is more important than ever for students to manage their time well, stay focused, and dedicate themselves to finishing this school year strong. Part of that effort is a student’s willingness to be present, be engaged, and to ask questions when help is needed. Our staff wrote best homework practices for students last year, and two of them are particularly applicable to this time of year. They include the following:

  1. Persist, but know when to move on; identify what your challenges are.
  2. Identify when you need help, then talk to your teacher about your specific challenge.

Please encourage your student to reflect on his or her challenges, work through obstacles, and reach out for help when necessary.

Planning.  Even though this year is quickly coming to a conclusion, planning for next year is also taking place. Counselors have met with students, taken course requests, and are building schedules for next fall. If you have questions about your student’s schedule or classes, feel free to contact the counseling office at 742-2740.

Also, if you are planning on moving over the summer, please notify Kathy Morales as soon as possible. She can be reached at 742-2708.
