Eagle River High School
October 2018

 PRINCIPAL
TIM HELVEY

Eagle River High School has many great things to celebrate and we are only five weeks into the school year. We started school with homecoming week which saw our Wolves win their first homecoming game. Student Government did a great job of planning this event with very little time to prepare. Our Robotics team was recognized twice this month for  their hard work and dedication. PEAKS scores were released and our school saw an increase in both math and language arts. Skye Brabson and Jennifer Hunting received notification of being National Merit Scholar Semifinalists.

Our athletic teams are competing at one of the highest levels in school history. Eagle River football team is setting new records each week that they play. The most recent record is their win over Chugiak for the first time in school history. School spirit is thriving and you can feel it in the halls. I have to thank all of our teachers, coaches and volunteers who make all of this happen. In order to be successful in the classroom and on the field requires the best possible people. Eagle River High School definitely has that covered.

We are quickly wrapping up the 1st academic quarter of the year. Quarter grades will be viewable in ParentConnect on Tuesday, October 23rd, just prior to high school parent conferences which take place on Wednesday, October 24th. Fall conferences provide a great opportunity to sit down one-on-one with each of your student’s teachers to ask how you can best support your student’s learning in that class. I hope to see you there. For specific times and details click HERE.

Please keep the important dates listed in the right column of this newsletter for reference in the next few months.

  1. All of our students in grade 9 and some of our students in grades 10-12 are taking the Map Growth assessment.
MAP Growth is the ASD benchmark assessment for students in grades 3-9 in reading and mathematics.  Grades 10-12 also take MAP Growth as part of Tier II and Tier III reading and mathematics courses.

MAP Growth is an online assessment tool used for instructional purposes.  MAP Growth is an adaptive assessment that provides each student a personalized testing experience with data that speaks to their individual progress and growth in mathematics and reading. Practice tests and accommodations are available.  MAP Growth will be administered three times per year during the ASD Benchmark windows:  fall, winter and spring.  The benchmark windows for 2018-2019 are:
  • Fall—September 4 - September 24
  • Winter—November 26 - December 14
  • Spring—April 22 - May 10
MAP Growth practice tests are available to allow students the opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions and tools available on the actual MAP Grow assessments such as, the highlighter and calculator.  Practice tests are provided at https://practice.mapnwea.org/#/practice-landing and require login information (USERNAME: grow  PASSWORD: grow) to access.
