Focus, focus, focus!  With the dark and cold settling in around us, it can be difficult for students to stay focused on school.  I’ve often thought that one of the more challenging things to do well in life is to finish strong.  At just the time when we near the end of something and feel our enthusiasm waning, life often asks the most of us.

Parents, I hope you will encourage your student to stay on top of assignments right up to the last day of class and to take final exams seriously. At the same time, I hope you will also help your student foster habits that set him or her up for success like getting regular sleep, eating balanced meals, practicing gratitude, limiting screen time, and exercising daily. These were amongst the suggestions from Eric D Boyer, a training coordinator with the UAA Center for Human Development, who spoke to PE and AFJROTC students recently about taking care of their all-around mental, physical, and social health.

In so many ways the last few weeks of the semester are amongst the most critical, and with a little encouragement, we can help our students stay healthy, finish strong, and go into winter break ready for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Final exams take place December 20th and 21st.

The PTSO is planning to hand out a nutritious snack item to students as they arrive on campus during finals.  They are asking for donations of healthy grab-and-go items like bananas, apples, granola bars, trail mix packets, yogurts, juice boxes and bottled water.  They also invite you to volunteer to help distribute these items to students in the commons as they arrive on campus.  If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Sharon Harris at harrtat@gmail.com.  Any nonperishable donations can be dropped off at the main office.

As we finish up the semester, I want to wish everyone in our school community a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Whether you’re traveling far and wide or enjoying a well-deserved rest at home, I hope your holidays are filled with the joy of the season.

Curriculum

Greetings from the Curriculum Office,

Final Exam Information. As we are nearing the end of first semester, and final exams draw near, please be aware that no early finals will be given.  Students who are not present on December 20th and 21st to take finals should fill out a pre-arranged absence form in the front office, and make arrangements with teachers to take finals when they return in January. Please also be aware the bell schedules are modified on final exam days.  The bell schedule for ERHS Finals can be found on the website at eagleriverhigh.asdk12.org.  KCC student schedules will also be affected--AM students will attend full day on Wednesday 12/20, and PM students will attend a full day on Thursday 12/21.

Student Schedules.  Second semester schedules will be distributed to students on December 13th, and counselors are currently accepting course change requests. Students will also receive a schedule when they return from break on January 8th.  After January 8th, students will have 5 school days to request a schedule change.  However, not all changes may be possible, and as a result, students are encouraged to communicate with their counselors early to facilitate a course change request. After January 12th students will be expected to complete the courses in which they are enrolled.

With that, I wish everyone a peaceful and restorative holiday season, and look forward to students returning in 2018 ready to get started on a new semester.

Thanks,

Luke Almon
