Eagle River High School
August 2018

 PRINCIPAL
TIM HELVEY

Greetings Wolf Pack!  It is with great excitement that I have the opportunity to introduce myself as the new principal at Eagle River High School.  This will be my 15th year in education with a variety of experience to share.  I spent six years in the Air Force working in the Security Police Field.  I came to Alaska to complete my teaching credentials and got my first teaching and coaching job in Bristol Bay.  After four years I found my way back on the road system in Ninilchik.  After two years I came on board with the Anchorage School District teaching Social Studies at West High School.  I spent five years teaching and coaching and decided to go into administration.  I’ve spent three years at Dimond High School, two years at South High School, and one year at Chugiak High School as an administrator. It is with great honor to now be the principal at the high school that I did my internship at.  Eagle River High School is the best high school in the district and I look forward to working with our entire community.

Curriculum

It is exciting to be back at Eagle River High School after a ten-year absence.  During that time, I worked at Service High School as an administrator and then at the District Office as the Director of Athletics.  As I begin my eighteenth year in education it is exciting to see the hallways fill with student athletes as they sign up for sports and as we begin our initial fall sport’s seasons.

In the world of curriculum our school is going to continue to work on meeting the individual needs of students and on implementing programs that provide the specific support that is required.  With this goal in mind, our ninth graders will begin the year in freshman English classes and after 6 weeks there will be some movement of students based on test scores, attendance and teacher recommendation.  Additional details on this topic have been provided in this newsletter by our fantastic language arts department, which has been working throughout the summer to fine tune this process.

In the world of student services, Eagle River High School will continue to work with students and families to provide a safe and respectful climate where all students can find educational success.  The themes of tolerance, inclusion and support are fundamental beliefs that make this school a wonderful place to work and a special place for our students.

If you have any questions or concerns as we move through the school year feel free to give me a call, send an email my direction or stop by the curriculum office.

Until then,
