Principal Board of Trustees Election - a notice from the returning officer Due to the withdrawal of Rachel Whitehead from the Board of Trustees election there is no longer a need to conduct a vote. Your voting papers can be destroyed.
As now the number of valid nominations is equal to the number of vacancies, I hereby declare the following duly elected.
Please note Nathan Cox will remain on the board as a co-opted member.
Board of Trustees On behalf of the school community I would like to thank the out going board for their work in the interests of the students of the school. The boards I have worked with at the school over the last decade have always been focussed on making decisions in enhancing the education and wellbeing of the kids. On a personal note I thank the out going board for their support of me in my role of Principal of Hamilton West School. I acknowledge the contribution of retiring trustees, John for his contribution over the last three years and Rachel for her very significant contribution as the chairperson over the last decade.
I look forward to working with the new board in the near future.
Budget News The school should do well out of the budget announced last week. If we do away with the school donation we will receive around $85,000 of new funding next year. We will also receive an increase in our operations funding of 1.8%.
Let's hope the meeting tomorrow between the Minister Hipkins and the teacher union settles the collective agreements for teachers.
Interviews Thanks to the parents / whanau who attended the interviews. Overall we had around 60% of parents / whanau book a time and attend an interview. I would like to increase that percentage moving forward. To do this I need to hear from you, so if you have any ideas you are welcome to contact me so we can organise a time to chat - email@example.com
Lock Down Procedure At the BoT meeting last week the school lock down procedure was reviewed. I will now share the updated procedure with the teachers and ask them to go over it calmly with their students (in a way that doesn't alarm them). A copy will also be loaded on to the school website for your information.
School-App I am currently investigating the use of school apps. One of the apps I'm looking at has a number of applications including push notifications (instant messaging), absentee messaging, paperless permission slips, notice, school calendar and newsletter. I'll keep you posted as I look into it more fully to see if it is an opportunity to enhance our communication with parents and whanau.
First Aid I am pleased to inform you that a large group of staff have completed their first aid certification following 2 training sessions over the last two Tuesdays. Another group did a refresher course to renew their certification last term - so all the staff at Hamilton West School now hold a current first aid certificate.

Community Notices/Advertising Hamilton Moving Together transport survey
Hamilton City Council wants to learn more about how people get around Hamilton, to help us better plan for and meet the changing transport needs of our growing city. We’re asking our community to please complete a short survey that asks eight questions about how people move around the city, views on road safety, and different ways of getting around. Along with general questions about the person taking the survey, it is expected to take less than 10 minutes to complete.
