Taxes no longer being withheld?

If your income is classified as a 'stipend' (ie NRSA or T32 training grant), it's possible your taxes are no longer being withheld. This does NOT necessarily mean you do not owe federal taxes. In fact, you may be responsible for making quarterly estimated tax payments.
Here's a resource you may find helpful in understanding and planning for your tax obligations in 2020.

On a fellowship?
Be sure to check if new legislation increases your options to save for retirement.

The Senate recently passed the SECURE Act, which allows for stipend income (for both graduate students and postdocs) to be contributed to some retirement accounts, like IRAs, beginning Jan 2020.
