Letter from Exile

Prof. Samiya Bashir wrote a stirring piece, "Letter From Exile: Finding Home in a Pandemic," for Literary Hub on returning from her time as a 2019-20 Rome Prize fellow in Literature: "Here I am. Locked down. Tensed up. On pause. Uncertain. One whole leap-year season in exile so far with no end in sight." Read the essay.
Congrats to history major Achinoam Bentov ’20 on winning the prestigious Class of ’21 Award for his thesis on the rivalry between three Eastern European powers triangulating their political interests in an attempt to establish authority over the Black Sea Steppe. Having mulled this thesis idea for years, he immersed himself in Eastern European history during winters and summers at Reed and was inspired by a class with Prof. David Sacks.
Following state guidance, Reed will close the campus to everyone except current students, faculty, and staff members beginning on August 3. This closure encompasses the entire campus, including the library and other facilities, parking lots, lawns, sports fields, canyon trails, off-leash dog areas, and the Reed ski cabin on Mount Hood. Please see the letter sent to neighbors earlier this month (alumni received a similar message via email).
ICYMI: Tracy Drake, Reed archivist, was interviewed on OPB's Think Out Loud about documenting history as it happens. Listen here. Also, read her thoughts on documenting the historical relationship between Black communities and law enforcement in the Chicago Reader.
To reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, we must educate ourselves about prevention and commit to checking daily for symptoms. Reed community members will be required to complete an online COVID-19 Prevention & Policy Training and the Daily Health Check. Please familiarize yourself with both initiatives. Also, here's the scoop on how to sign up for a COVID-19 test if you are a student who will live off campus this fall, a faculty member, or a staff member (Reed ID required at check in).

This newsletter for the Reed community is distributed to an all-campus list, thus the unsubscribe option is not *really* available (even if MailChimp says it is in the boilerplate, which we cannot remove!). Membership to this list is automatically maintained; if you believe you have received this in error, please contact cus@reed.edu.
