UNDERSTANDING EMERGING MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES: DATEMATS PRE-MOBILITY ACTIVITIES FOR DESIGN & ENGINEERING STUDENTS

The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) part of the Datemats project are tightly collaborating to develop a unique training methodology and framework to educate the next generation of design-practitioners able to thoroughly understand and apply Emerging Materials and Technologies (EM&Ts). In order to test the training contents for each of the addressed EM&Ts areas, the Datemats pre-mobility activity has been set up: a series of blended learning sessions will provide design and engineering students with understanding and deeper knowledge about Advanced Growing, Experimental Wood-based, Nano- and Interactive Connected Smart (ICS) Materials. All the Datemats results are going to be publicly accessible, as are these first Open Education Resources (OERs) produced during the first months of 2020. Want to understand more about EM&Ts and get to know the Datemats teaching experts? Discover the audio-visuals available on the Datemats Youtube-channel or go on reading...

EMERGING VIRUS CHANGING THE PLANS: ACTIVITIES AND MEETINGS TRANSFERRED TO THE VIRTUAL WORLDAS

Despite the unforeseen pandemic that has impacted all of our lives, the Datemats consortium is working hard to keep up with the planned activities and objectives. Nevertheless the screen-filtered meeting, the exchange between partners was intense and fruitful, confirming the good team-spirit and enthusiasm while collaborating. Several results will be published soon after this first year of project execution. Read more...

DESIGN BETWEEN ENVISIONING AND PROTOTYPING: AN EXPERIMENTAL HACKATHON BY THE DESIGN DEPARTMENT OF THE POLITECNICO DI MILANO.

What if materials could transform due to user interaction, environmental condition, and digital data? New materials with smart, dynamic, and interactive behaviours are emerging as enablers of meaningful, multi-sensory, and intuitive experiences. “DATA < > MATERIALS: Design between Envisioning and Prototyping” is a two-day Hackathon dealing with Smart and Interactive technologies, Bio-based materials, Digital Manufacturing, and Speculative Design. Design students of the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano took part in the challenge of hands-on experimentation with bioplastics and electronics, tutored by a team of young research fellows and PhD students of the Design Department. Stimulated by technology-oriented futures scenarios, they produced four interactive material-based prototypes of wearables and interfaces able to sense and respond to data, delivering specific information. THE CHEMARTS COOKBOOK: UNDERSTANDING WOOD-BASED MATERIALS AND HOW THEY CAN BE TRANSFORMED AND APPLIED

How can we make flexible and transparent wood-based materials? What kinds of materials can we derive from trees, while still respecting the preciousness of nature? Could the innovative use of renewable cellulosic materials change our material world?
The CHEMARTS Cookbook gives both simple and more advanced ideas and recipes for hands-on experiments with wood-based materials. The book showcases the most interesting explorations focusing on raw materials that are processed either chemically or mechanically from trees or other plants: cellulose fibres, micro- or nano-structured fibrils, cellulose derivatives, lignin, bark and wood extractives.
