Dear Science Supporter,

Spring has arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley and we are busy planning for a year filled with STEM programs and events for youth and adults alike! We recently completed our winter Physics Cafe series, in conjunction with Aspen Center for Physics. This year saw an especially good lineup of speakers, thanks to the work of Patty Fox at ACP. We had high attendance for all of the events, and it was great to see so many of you there.

We have hired our largest Intern-Educator class yet, and they are currently in training and helping to develop new programs for ASC to deliver this summer (see below). Our popular Science Sundays will be back later this month, in both Aspen and Basalt this year. At the end of June our summer programs kick off with a Physics for Kids BBQ in Basalt, before the series moves back to the Aspen Center for Physics campus July 11th. New this year, ASC has created Rocket Camp! for middle-school students, and we'll be at the Aspen Farmers Market in June in July with hands-on STEM activities for kids. For adults and teens the Science of Music is back this summer with three sessions, presented in partnership with Aspen Music Festival and School. We'll also have monthly New Moon Stargazing and Science of Cooking. And of course, our big summer event, the Summer Science Fair, will take place again on August 5th!

You can find all of these events on our website calendar. You can also download our Program Brochure and 2018 Schedule of Events. We have other events that are added frequently, so check our website calendar for updates. If you like what we do, like us on Facebook, and give us a 5 star review!

Summer is the time of year when we present most of our programs and bear the corresponding costs. We strive to provide our programming at accessible prices, and your support is critical to us doing so. If you like our mission and our programming, please consider a donation today. Donations of all sizes are very much appreciated!

We look forward to seeing you at our programs soon!

David Houggy
President

Notes from the Chair

Mike Simmons, ASC Board Chair

Aspen Science Center continues to grow and thrive. The engaging programs ASC brings to the Valley are an amazing result of the imaginative work of President David Houggy and our staff, Operations Manager Keith Berglund and Educational Programs Manager Maya Hunt. Their backgrounds in science and teaching really show. We notice that the kids of this Valley are hungry for out of school activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), exactly what our programs offer.

Kids on the Front Range enjoy a wealth of resources from research universities, national laboratories, museums, and high-tech companies. The Board and Staff of ASC are determined to expand our program to offer comparable enrichment to the lives of local kids. I encourage all like-minded science enthusiasts to join us in our mission of advancing the public understanding of science. Please contact
David Houggy to find out how to get involved!

Aspen Science Center Bringing More Programming to Mid-Valley

Since 2005, Aspen Science Center has been bringing quality science events and program to Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. We are determined to bringing more of our programing to the Roaring Fork Valley beyond just the immediate Aspen area. We began this progression last year, when we held several programs in the Basalt area, including Wednesday After-School Enrichment, Physics for Kids BBQ, New Moon Stargazer and Family Science Night at Basalt Middle School.

This year we are again bringing our Physics for Kids BBQs, New Moon Stargazer, and Family Science Nights back to both Basalt and Carbondale, along with Science Sundays in May. And our new Rocket Camp! will debut this July at Basalt Middle School (registration now open!).

Our plan is to bring more and more
Out-of-School STEM (OSS) programming to the mid-valley and beyond. We are currently raising funds to open an after-school "Discovery Zone" in the mid-valley, which will be open every day after school, on weekends, and in the summer, and would provide a fun, educational location from which to host a wide variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs.

If you are interested in helping bring these types of programs to the mid-valley, contact
David Houggy, ASC President, to find out how you can help!
