Cataloguing abandoned boats.
Transport Canada is developing a data base of abandoned boats across the province and they need your help.
Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. is working with Transport Canada to create an inventory of vessels and determine the quantity, location and state of abandoned boats across NL and Labrador. Similar data has already been collected in BC, NS, NB and PEI. Two major factors for this study are navigational concerns and environmental impacts of these vessels on the local waterways.
Individuals conducting this survey will be contacting Small Crafts Harbours as well as all the Harbour Authorities throughout the province and local marine service centres. In addition, they are contacting key stakeholders such as MNL, Canadian Coast Guard, FFAW and any other relevant associations who may have interest in this project.
Any MNL members who may have information which identifies abandoned vessels are kindly asked to contact researchers by completing a data collection sheet and submitting it to the contact below.
In 2013, Transport Canada put together a small inventory of approximately 35 vessels, however, this is only a very small fraction of the number of boats throughout the province. This project aims to identify a more accurate number.
