There will be no Project Day in June. The monthly series, when members show recent work and work-in-progress for feedback and discussion, is held on first Mondays, except during the summer. Due to Labor Day, the series will resume on Monday, September 12, from 1-3 pm in the Video Lab.  President’s Corner
The Video Club extends lots of “get well” wishes to President Steve Carman. Last week, while he and his wife, Joan, were on an Alaska cruise, Steve suffered a fall that landed him in a Seattle hospital. On Thursday, May 26, Joan emailed club leaders: “The second day of our 2-week Alaskan cruise, Steve fell and cut his head and tweaked his neck. They kept him in the ship's infirmary overnight until we landed in Ketchikan where they took him to the hospital for x-rays. He has a broken neck so they air-lifted us to Seattle where he is having surgery today. We will be here at least 10 days for recovery and rehab before we can fly home. I'll keep you informed. Please let everyone know.”
 The surgery took place the next day, Friday, May 27, when, thankfully, Joan's news was better. She emailed: “The surgery went well - Steve will be fine. Hopefully we can fly home in a week.” By Sunday, May 29, Joan emailed: “I think it will be at least a week before we can fly home.”
Steve and Joan remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Class on “iMovie & Photos for iPhone & iPad” Set for Monday, June 6
 Students in Al Koch's “iMovie & Photo for iPhone & iPad” class on April 25 were so enthusiastic that Al is offering the training again on Monday, June 6, from 1-4 pm in the Video Lab. The class will focus specifically on video editing with iMovie and still-photo editing and management with Apple's app, Photos (which recently replaced iPhoto). Participants will do everything on their iPhones or iPads. One of our club's Mac gurus, Al has previously taught iMovie classes for the Macintosh and co-led iMovie Workshop with Steve Carman.
“We p lan to shoot and edit complete videos during the three-hour class,” Al explains, adding, “Students must have the current version of iMovie and Photos and the latest operating system on their devices and must already know how to use their devices, including taking photos and videos. If they don't already have these updates and basic skills, they can get help at the Mac Learning Center on the third floor of the Community Center.” See news of the Mac Club in this issue.

Scott Marvel to Discuss Future of Video at June 16 General Meeting
 “YOU Are the Future of Video Technology,” according to professional videographer and Village resident Scott Marvel, who will explain how we can now communicate quickly and easily via smartphone videos at the club's General Meeting on Thursday, June 16, at 6:30 pm in the Video Lab.
Says Scott: “In 2016, it is possible to shoot a 4k video on your phone, edit it, add voice-over, titles, and music while you are out to eat at you favorite restaurant, and have people all over the world be watching it by the time the check comes. Apps like Facebook Live and Periscope are revolutionizing how people are sharing their amazing moments with 1.5 billion people all over planet earth. The power to share your best experiences is now in your hands! What are you waiting for?”

NEW TWO-SESSION CLASS
“Audio Post-Production” Class to Begin June 22
 A new course in “Audio Post Production” will be offered on two consecutive Wednesday mornings, beginning June 22, 10 am-noon in the Video Lab. Cost is $5 per session and pre-registration is not required.
Says instructor Tom Nash: “OK, so your audio has problems – unwanted background noise, generally mushy sound. We can't promise miracles, of course, but there are some things you can do to make it better. “Multi-Camera Studio Production” Students Continue Self-Training
 Several members of Tom Nash's recent “Multi-Camera Studio Production” class, including Lisa Aoki, Betsy Starkweather, Leon Goldberg, Marsha McCoskrie, Betsy Martin, Lucy Parker, and Andy Cullinane, have been meeting to become more skilled at the technical work involved in shooting multi-camera videos in the Studio, using our new video switcher. The key roles required for such shoots are director, switcher operator, audio operator, floor manager, and camera operator/s.
Reports Lucy, “We take out and set up the equipment and plan and execute several short shoots, usually 'fake' interviews, changing tech roles with each project. Then we review and critique our work and put the equipment away.” A fourth such self-training session has been scheduled in the Video Studio on Wednesday, June 1, at 10 am.
“We want to gain familiarity with the Studio equipment – both for individual projects, when members will need to recruit other crew members to carry out their personal shoots – as well as to assist with ongoing club projects,” explains Betsy Martin. “We're 'helping ourselves by helping each other,' so to speak.”

Also, the "Multi-Camera Studio Production" class will be repeated next fall. Plan to take it!

Plans for Fall 2016 Video Classes Announced
 A Message from Tom Nash:
This fall we will repeat the popular “Multi-Camera Studio Production” class, and add an “Advanced Studio Production” class for those who want to further hone their skills. In the basic class, we will learn multi-camera studio production using our new switcher and audio board. We will rotate positions so everyone gets a chance to do everything, including presenting. In the advanced course, we will make use of some of the more advanced tools and techniques, including compositing using green screen. Multi-camera studio production offers many advantages, not the least of which is that at the end of the production session the program is ready to use without further editing.
 Other courses slated for fall include: “Introduction to Video Production,” covering camera, lighting, sound and editing. Also “Introduction to Video Editing for the PC” using Corel Video Studio. In addition, Chuck Hale has offered to repeat his popular “How to Organize Pictures and Videos” and “Introduction to YouTube” classes. Betsy Martin and Lucy Parker are also willing to repeat their “How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck”class if interest warrants. Instruction in video editing with iMovie for Macintosh computer users and iPhone and iPad users will also be available.
Dates and times for all classes to be announced.
Certification: We will also continue our Videography Certification program. We will coach you one-on-one on the skills needed for certification on our Studio camcorders, and award a certificate when you have acquired the skills needed. It’s fun and an easy way to sharpen your skills.

Judy Kriger Shared Overview of Animation at May 19 General Meeting
 Animator Judy Kriger gave a broad overview of the field of video animation – along with a generous supply of references and web links – when she spoke on “Introduction to Animation: Drawing at 24 Frames Per Second” at our May 19 General Meeting in the Video Lab. Prof. Kriger is an Assistant Professor in Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts and author of the book, Animated Realism,
Among Prof. Kriger's recommendations -- Maya by AutoDesk, which she called "the industry standard for 3-D animation" (a free demo download is available); use of Adobe's AfterEffects (see below); Dissolve.com, a source of unusual video clips and stock photos (they charge but offer free search assistance and occasional free clips and photos). Another tip: Oscar-nominated animated films may be seen online near Oscar time at the Oscar website. Below are additional links forwarded to Steve Carman by Prof. Kriger.

OTHER TECH CLUBS
PC Club
The PC Club is winding up its Session 3 classes this month and will not be holding more classes or another General Meeting until September, as they're dark in the summer. The PC Workshop, with computers running both Windows 7 and Windows 10, will continue to be open all summer, Monday-Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, Volunteers staff members help Village residents improve their computer skills. Mac Club
The Mac Club will have no General Meeting in June. Their next General Meeting will be October 13. However, during the summer, the Anne and Charles Clark Mac Learning Center will continue to be open Monday-Friday from 9 am to 3 pm on the third floor of the Community Center, where supervisors assist members and residents with questions related to Apple devices. During June, the club is offering a range of classes, including “Beginning iPad,” “Intermediate iPad,” “Beginning iPhone,” “Intermediate iPhone,” “Mac Laptop/Desktop,” and “Intermediate iMac.” No advance registration is required. A $2 donation per class is requested to support the Learning Center. For class dates, times, and names of instructors (plus additional club information) see the club website.
Camera Club
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Laguna Woods Camera Club. On April 20, the Mayor and City Council members of Laguna Woods presented a Certificate of Commendation to Camera Club President Mac McNamar and club officers Joel Goldstein and Mark Rabinowitch. For more information, read Joel Goldstein's excellent article about the club and view a copy of the certificate as well as a photograph commemorating the ceremony on the club website's 50th Anniversary Page.
In another part of the Anniversary celebration, Joel Goldstein will be making several appearances on the Village's Channel 6: Tuesday, June 21, "This Day," hosted by Ken Goldenberg at 8:30 am (repeated at 12:30 pm and 5 pm that day) and Monday, September 12, "Club Talk," hosted by Tony Barr at 10 am (repeated the next four Mondays at the same time). This program will also be re-broadcast on September 15 and 22 (Thursdays) at 11:30 am. In addition, it will be uploaded to YouTube.
Digital Slide Show Competition: Join the Camera Club on Monday, June 13, in Dining Room 2 of Clubhouse 3 to view digital slide show entries submitted by members. Each show will be six minutes long or less. Attendees will vote for their favorites, and awards will be presented to the three shows receiving the most votes. This event is open to Laguna Woods Village residents and their guests. A $3 donation will be collected at the door from non-members.

Monday, June 27: Showcase: "Alaska, Land of Contrasts," presented by Louise Stuart, and "Impressions of Cuba," presented by Linda Berman, in Clubhouse 3, Dining Room 2, at 6:30 pm. This event is for open to Laguna Woods Village residents and their guests. A $3 donation will be collected at the door from non-members.
Tuesday, June 28: Photo Workshop: "Macro Photography," presented by Jim Graver in Clubhouse 4, Photo Classroom, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. You will learn beginner tips on capturing macro images; equipment that can be used; focusing, distortion, viewing, depth of field, lighting and light loss, camera settings, backgrounds, and using flash; as well as post‐processing enhancements. The class fee is $5 for Camera Club members, $10 for non‐members. If you would like to join the Camera Club, the membership fee is $20 and includes the class registration. Fees will be collected at the door. The first 45 students to register will be accepted, and the club will confirm your acceptance by email reply. If registrations exceed 45, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified. To register, send an email to Jim Graver at cameraclublh@gmail.com with the subject line “Macro.” Include your name and whether you are or are not a Camera Club member and/or if you are not a Laguna Woods resident.
