With so many different foods on the table for Thanksgiving, what's the one wine to choose to pair with it all? Is there one wine that works best?
Suggestion #1: Drink that yummy, special wine (the one you've picked out and have been waiting to open), before your guests arrive! Why? Chances are it'll get lost in the orchestra of so many flavors and a crowded full plate! Having said that, sometimes it's all about the sharing :)
Suggestion #2:Overall, wines with lower alcohol, that are bright & fresh in style, plus have a little sweetness (especially if foods on your Thanksgiving table include sugar & sweetness) will work best!
Suggestion #3: If you want to pair dry wines with Thanksgiving (where the pairings make the wine taste amazing), do your best to save the sweets on your plate to be eaten last, or until thoughts of magical pairings have become afterthoughts :)
SPECIFIC WINE IDEAS FOR THANKSGIVING:
1. ACKERMANN RIESLING SPATLESE--$24
German Riesling is very often low alcohol and high acid. Low alcohol pairs well with salty foods. High acid pairs well with fatty & tart foods. There's a little bit of sugar in this wine (which makes this a yummy overall pairing), especially if there's some sugar included on the main plate at your Thanksgiving.
2. GILLI MALVASIA CASANUOVA DON BOSCO--$23
This deep red has a touch of spritz and a bit of sweetness. Super playful and fun, it brings a smile easily! From Italy's Piedmonte region it'll pair well for the same reasons as a slightly sweet German Riesling will.
3. TRUCHARD CHARDONNAY '12--$33
Yes I'm recommending Chardonnay. This one is from the Carneros district at the southern end of the Napa Valley. Pure deliciousness found here and many a rebeller to Chardonnay will say wow that's awesome! At our recent Thanksgiving pairing event, this wine hit the spot with stuffing, turkey, gravy & winter squash.
4. BRETON MORGON BEAUJOLAIS--$30
This lighter styled dry red, has a freshness and liveliness that'll pair well with lots of Thanksgiving fare. At our recent Thanksgiving pairing event, this wine was a huge hit specifically with the winter squash.
5. DOMINIO IV PINOT NOIR LOVE LIES BLEEDING--$29
When it comes to Oregon, a Pinot Noir with pretty fruit can work amazingly with turkey, stuffing, gravy and more. The fruit for this wine comes from Archery Summit, but the winemaking style comes from Dominio IV's Patrick Reuter and yields a pretty, fruit driven wine that asks for food and drinks beautifully. Great price too!!
