Send us your Halloween photos!

Halloween doesn't have to be cancelled because of coronavirus! Whilst traditional Trick or Treating might be best avoided this year there are lots of other and safer ways to celebrate and have fun!

Check out some of these ideas from The Hillingdon & Uxbridge Times:

Carving or decorating pumpkins

Get creative with members of your household and displaying them in your window, or outside. This year, why not carve a rainbow in your pumpkin?

See North Hertfordshire District Council's ‘how to’ video here:

'Spot the pumpkin'

Take part in a local ‘spot the pumpkin’ trail throughout half term week, where people display pumpkin or Halloween pictures in their windows and you have to try and find them all with your family.

Scavenger hunt

Organise a Halloween scavenger hunt, where children from your household are given lists of Halloween-themed things to look for either in your home, or outdoors.

Skype or Zoom night

Have a virtual Halloween costume competition using zoom or Skype.

Movie night

Have a Halloween film night with your household.

Duvall finds a new job through GRoW’s Jobs Bulletin

Duvall was referred to the GRoW Programme through the Family Case Worker at her children’s school and starts a new job next month.

Duvall said “I really needed to find work after my personal circumstances changed quite suddenly.  Margaret, the Family Case Worker at Cranford Park Academy recommended I speak to the people at GRoW and I was put in touch with Tosin as my GRoW Adviser.

I had been out of work since February after I had to leave my job at Heathrow where I had worked for 8 years.  As my job entailed a lot of contact with customers and handling cash I felt it was too high risk to continue as my mum and stepdad are in a vulnerable group and I could not risk exposing them to the coronavirus.

Tosin was very helpful with regards to the type of jobs that are available now during the pandemic and really helped to manage my expectations. I was looking to do something different to what I was doing before, I worked shifts with very early starts and I had to rely on my mum to help me a lot with my children.  My mum is moving home soon though which means I will have less support and so I needed to find a job with hours that fit around my children. I have experience in customer service and I also did a 4 year course in Health and Social Care which boosts my cv.  I hadn’t considered working in a school before but Tosin opened my eyes up to the opportunities it presents, particularly as it means working term-time only and fitting around my children.

I applied for a job that I saw in the GRoW Newsletter and Jobs Bulletin, it was for a Lunchtime Controller at a local primary school.  I filled in their application form online and they contacted me soon afterwards and they have given me a start date of November.  The job entails helping to assist the children at lunchtimes and helping them follow the guidelines due to the new covid-19 restrictions.

I am hoping that now I am already working there that new opportunities might arise to increase my hours and expand my job role.  I will continue to check out the GRoW Jobs Bulletin every week though to see what other jobs are out there for me to apply for.”

New Group for Mums with children with ASD starting 4th November

We know that if you have a child with ASD it can present some challenges including feelings of isolation and issues around how to work when your child has additional needs.

To help mums with children with ASD GRoW are setting up a new group which will take place via Zoom every two weeks, starting on Wednesday 4th November at 10.00am.

The group will be run by Hayley Carr, who is a former GRoW participant and mum to two autistic children and the purpose is:

  • To help mums of autistic children feel they are not alone and provide emotional support
  • To think about what getting back to work means if you have an autistic child - for mum and the child
  • To look at practical support that can be provided such as Childcare and Childminders that are autism friendly
  • To discuss workshops and training that are available for parents of autistic children
  • Offer help and advice on financial aspects such as DLA, Charities, discounts, Child Tax Credits or other financial help that is available and needed

If you love delivering an excellent service, then you’ll love being part of the team at Argos. It’s so much more than just driving; you’ll be the person delivering smiles right to our customers doors, making sure they get their orders exactly when they want to. When you’re not driving, you’ll be maintaining a slick operation in the stock room or on the shop floor so we’re always delivering the right products at the right time.

Know your shift patterns

Most of our roles work part-time with a variety of shifts across the week and three shift blocks during the day; Monday to Sunday 5:00am - 1:00pm, 1:00pm - 6:00pm, 6:00pm - 10:30pm. You’ll have your guaranteed part-time hours every week and there will be opportunities for you to work overtime if you want to.

Is this the job for you?

You must have a full UK/EU manual driving licence, and you must have held this for at least 12 months (with no more than 6 points on your licence). You also need to be over 18 years old.

Ideally you should have experience of driving a 3.5 tonne vehicle within the last three years. We will assess your driving skills as part of the recruitment process and you’ll get full training before you start driving to our customers.

You’ll get plenty of benefits including holiday allowance of 22 days, a company pension, and a 10% discount in Argos and Sainsbury’s, and 25% in Habitat (after 3 months).

You’re also part of a multi-brand multi-channel retailer that prioritises colleague development so this role could propel your career within one of our brands.

What next?

If this sounds like the perfect role for you, submit your application online as soon as possible, it only takes about 15 minutes to complete. You’ll then receive a short test to complete online which will take you around 20 minutes to complete. If you pass the test, the store will review your application and may invite you for a one hour in-store interview. Dependent on the outcome of your interview, you may be invited to a 30 minute driving assessment which you’ll need to pass before we confirm your offer.

We’re a proud equal opportunities employer that values diversity at every level of our business.
