Sermon Text: Mark 10:35-45
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’ And he said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’ They replied, 'We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.’
When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, ‘You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’
A Letter From Your Pastor
Dear Saints of Saint Paul’s UMC,
As we are all well aware, COVID 19 had a devastating impact on the Christian Church. Many long-held traditions have been discontinued while membership and attendance are lagging. It also affected us, Saint Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church, here in Pawleys Island. The past year has been harsh for us, for we are an older congregation and were far more vulnerable than the average church. Then too, without resources and young hands and backs to set up and takedown, we were forced to limit our gatherings. Thankfully we were able to introduce worship via streaming. We now have the “live” streaming capability in both the Sanctuary and Berly Hall.
As your Pastor, I would like us to meet as a family of faith to discuss our way forward as a congregation. This meeting will not be a gripe session or a time for venting, and nor will there be votes taken. It will simply be a time for open discussion about our future as a congregation. It is not about what or who we have lost, but what and who we can gain. We must stop grieving over what we are not and stop grumbling over what we used to do. That is a total waste of spiritual energy and vitality and puts us in a perpetual state of nothingness that ensures continued decline.
Now is the time to celebrate who we are. It is the time to determine how we can become the best version of ourselves in our local community. It is time for all of us to recognize we are called to serve and not be served. To become the best, we must each give our best in service. I firmly believe the best years of Saint Paul’s UMC can still lie ahead if we want it and are willing to commit to it. Will it look like twenty years ago? No.
So, on November 7th, Sunday School will be at 9:00, and we will then have one service at 10:00 in the Sanctuary. Following the worship service, we will move to Berly for some lite refreshments, and at 11:15, we will begin our meeting there. Following the meeting, we will celebrate Holy Communion together.
My prayer is that each of you will be present, you will have something positive to interject, we will become closer as a family of faith, commit yourself to the future of the church, and you will receive the hand of God’s blessing.
Would you please put the date on your calendar? I am
Yours in Christ,
Our Faithfulness Sunday, October 10, 2021

A Message From Stewardship
The Stewardship Committee is extremely thankful for all pledges that have been committed to St. Paul’s over the past few weeks. We are still in need of financial support to move forward with our 2022 financial, ministry and missions planning.
If you haven't done so, we hope you will consider a financial pledge to the St. Paul’s Waccamaw UMC in 2022.
If you need a pledge card contact the church office or download from the stewardship webpage. You may mail the card to us, drop it off at the church office lockbox located at the north door of the Administration building or email a copy of it to the Treasurer email address: email@example.com.
There is a lot of God’s work to do in our church and community. Your donations sustain the church, ministries and missions. We are thankful for your support and ask for your prayers as we plan for the remainder of this year and 2022.

Join the J.O.Y. Class for a study of Ruth—Starting October 24th
The main theme of the Book of Ruth is redemption. While the book illustrates the concept of redemption beautifully, its primary purpose appears to have been to reveal how God often works providentially behind the scenes, bringing His will to pass. As we study Ruth, we will appreciate anew the tough choices of faith the characters in the story made, and be encouraged to do the same as we rely on God who accomplishes His purposes through people who trust Him.
We’d love to have you join the J.O.Y. class for this powerful 4-week study.
