SVRC Awards and Scholarships Update:

This Fall we had a record number of scholarship applications, particularly from our graduate and professional students. Our Awards Board is scheduled to meet next week to review the applications and determine appropriate award matches and allocations.

Thanks in part to our fundraising efforts with the Student Veterans Association (SVA), this year everyone who applied and was eligible to receive an award will receive one. However – as noted on the application – during this Fall cycle the awards were limited to full-time degree seeking students with at least 18 months of active duty service. Those who did not meet the application criteria were not considered.

We anticipate releasing the results of this Fall’s Awards/Scholarship cycle on October 5th.

UGA Veterans Week Military Photo Submission
Again this year, during the week of Veterans Day we will be displaying photos of our Student Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and Active Duty members on the Tate Student Center Art Wall. Traditionally, the display and the one on the Sanford Stadium Jumbotron occur in conjunction with the Military Appreciation Game. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic there will not be a Military Appreciation Game this year. With that said, we will prominently display pictures of our military-affiliated students in uniform on the Art Wall from November 6-13.

We have also asked the Athletic Association for permission to display and photograph your images on the Jumbotron in Sanford Stadium after the football season ends and the current restrictions are loosen. We'll keep you informed as this unfolds and if approved, send you the digital picture of your image on the big screen.

To encourage your participation, all military-affiliated students (i.e. National Guard, Reservist, Veteran, or Active Duty) who submit an acceptable photo will be entered into the drawing for a football autographed by Head Coach Kirby Smart plus three other items, which we are working with the Athletic Association to also get autographed.

NOTE:  You can enter the November 12th drawing up to four times by (1) submitting a photo for display; (2) helping the SVA place flags for their annual Veterans Week Display (November 10th-12th); (3) attending the November 11th Waffle House To-Go Breakfast on Veterans Day; and (4) completing an Oral History or the Readiness Program by November 10th. The deadline for image submission is October 13th.

Student Veterans Association (SVA) Update:

Since the last newsletter, numerous veterans have expressed interest in joining the SVA’s Leadership Team. We have a tentative senior cabinet in place that is working with the current team to ensure a smooth transition going into CY 2021. Formal elections are tentatively scheduled for November 9th-12th, 2020.

There are going to be two options to cast your vote. One is, in person on Veterans Day November 11th, 2020 in conjunction with the SVRC Waffle House Breakfast To-Go. The other option is to vote online November 9th-12th. More information will follow as we get closer.

In the interim, if you are interested in connecting with other Student Veterans, please feel free to join the UGA SVA GroupMe. If you have questions or comments about different topics this is a great tool to reach out to your peers.

How to Answer "What Are Your Hobbies?" in an Interview

When you’re deep in job interview mode, a seemingly unrelated question like, “What are your hobbies?” might throw you for a loop.

Personal questions can spark anxiety even more than other common interview questions. But it’s not a trick. Interviewers asking about what you do for fun actually want to hear you talk about your hobbies.  Learn more about how to navigate this question here.
