Digital Newsletter - n°2
September 2020

Dear readers,

Nowadays, organisations are being heavily impacted by the actions taken by the national governments around the world to stop the spread of the coronavirus and protect the citizens. In this particular context, companies must adapt themselves and implement new specific measures to ensure business and growth continuity.

During this challenging situation, w
e will make sure to keep SHERLOCK in the spotlight and work to expand our networks to leverage the knowledge about SHERLOCK technologies and applications. In this perspective, we invite you to look through this newsletter and SHERLOCK's website to benefit from our work and learn how we are working on smart manufacturing.

Besides, SHERLOCK finished its first journey in April 2020. We are getting ready for the next busy period of the project, full of opportunities for great accomplishments.

Thanking all our partners for their involvement, we encourage you to join us on Twitter, Facebook LinkedIn to keep up with our latest updates!

Take care & stay safe!

Best wishes

Join us for the 8th CIRP on Assembly Technology and Systems!

A successful first review meeting!

The project finished the first period of its journey!

SHERLOCK had its first review meeting, which took place on 7 May. Due to the current situation and the travel restrictions, the consortium held the review meeting in video conference. In this digital space, work package coordinators presented their progress in terms of new technologies that enabled the enhancement of Human-Robot Collaboration.

After these insightful discussions, our SHERLOCK team is more than ready to move forward and to keep on working on the development of safer and more agile robotic technologies.

We were present at the European Robotics Forum 2020 in Málaga!

For the second time, we attended the most influential meeting of the robotics community: the European Robotics Forum, in March. This year, the event was held in Málaga and focused on the potential of future robotic applications and AI, to ethics, inclusion and social impact. We had the chance to explore these key topics through a series of multidisciplinary workshops, conferences and presentations. Besides, an exhibition showcasing the most advanced prototypes, products and services of the EU Horizon 2020 research programme took place during the two days forum.
For two years in a row, we co-hosted the 7th workshop dedicated to Hybrid Production, in close collaboration with other similar EU projects. We took this great opportunity to present the SHERLOCK benefits, as well as some results of our researches, and to share our experiences with the robotics community.

A new Industrial Strategy for Europe

On 10 March, the European Commission published its Industrial Strategy for Europe.
In alignment with its intention to move towards the first climate-neutral continent and to leverage its digital leadership, the European Commission defined targets and benchmarks for this new industrial strategy.

Please see below a summary of the EU Industrial Strategy featuring key highlights:
  • Supporting industries to become more productive, by focusing on the digital transformation within the industries and speeding up investments in research and the implementation of technologies, such as AI.
  • Being an industrial innovation strategy at heart. In other terms, innovations, new technologies and solutions would be embedded in the policymaking.
  • Launching of a Public Private Partnership in the Horizon Europe programme to help industries developing new technologies to successfully achieve their goals.
  • Regarding the gender balance, the European Commission emphasizes the essential prerequisite for having better equity between woman and men in industries. It is ensured through the implementation of the EU Gender Strategy.
  • Development of key enabling technologies will be particularly supported to enhance the Europe's industrial future, including robotics.
  • Orienting the strategy toward an ecological transition for industries.
AI-Robotics vs COVID-19

To face the current worldwide sanitary crisis caused by the spread of COVID-19, the European Commission is driving a call-to-action to collect AI-based ideas and projects, as well as robotics solutions, or any other kind of initiatives that could be deployed in the healthcare sector and help to decrease the spread of the virus.

Those ideas are gathered to become part of the common European response to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Have you developed an AI system or you assembled a robotic engine which could be used in this unprecedented context, and you would like to contribute? Find out how you can help here.
