Crummer Rollins Venture Plan Competition Results

The Crummer Rollins Venture Plan Competition, Central Florida’s largest pitch competition, was held last week at the Bush Auditorium on the Rollins College campus in Winter Park. AireHealth, a startup developing a connected-portable nebulizer for the delivery of medication to the lungs for asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis patients, won and was awarded a cash prize of $25,000 and has the option of receiving an additional $25,000 minimum equity investment from venVelo.  Omnimodal, a startup providing cities with a comprehensive real-time transit data platform, placed second and received $15,000. Yaupon Brothers American Tea, a startup creating a tea using the Yaupon Holly, a Florida native plant, placed third and received $7,500. Xmdocs, a startup providing real-time tracking and automation for shippers with a collaborative platform, placed fourth and received $2,500.

During the 15 minute Q&A for each startup the judges questioning centered on one main topic - customers. How are you going to get them and/or how are you going to increase the number you already have?  While I do not have any insight into the judges deliberation, I think the ordering of the winners followed closely on the judges perception of the startup's traction as measured by its progress in obtaining customers.

Women founded startups are doing exceptionally well in this competition! The winning startup, AireHealth, is headed up by a woman CEO, Stacie Ruth.  In a world where most startups are founded by men, amazingly, the last 4 winners of the Rollins competition have also been headed up by women founders - Statusphere, Fleet Zoo, Details Flowers, and Fattmerchant.  So women founded startups are now 5 in a row at Rollins!

Orlando’s tech employment increases 4.5% – twice the national average

The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metro area added 3,952 tech jobs between 2017 and 2018 , a 4.5% increase in net tech employment, according to a new report, Cyberstates 2019 - the definitive guide to the US tech industry and tech workforce from the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). This percentage increase was almost double the national average of 2.3% and the 4th highest among all US metro areas (behind only San Francisco, Charlotte, and Raleigh). The total increase in tech jobs was the 17th highest among all US metro areas.

We still have a ways to go to move into the pantheon of tech hubs, but this increase is encouraging.  Our ranking nationally: 92,022 tech jobs in 2018 ranked us 26th in net tech employment, tech jobs were 7.1% of the total workforce (ranked 20th nationally), and these jobs contributed $12.4B or 10.4% to Orlando’s economy (ranked 26th nationally).

VentureScaleUp Applications Open

The Spring cohort of VentureScaleUp will start on 15 April at Catalyst. The aim of the 12-week program is to accelerate startups and get them on the road to scaling and investment. VSU seeks startups with 1) a core founding team in place, 2) a MVP that is customer validated, and 3) significant growth potential. To date 31 startups have participated in the program since the Fall of 2015 and they have raised over $6M since their demo day. This is an all-volunteer effort of mentors and investors and the program is no fee and no equity taken.

We are looking for the best startups that fit our criteria.  If you are one of those, or know one that is, please apply (or encourage them to apply) here.
