Northeast Florida’s LGBT residents.

Letter from the President

Dear Members and Supporters,
We write to update you on the work of the LGBT Community Fund, and to ask for your continued support of our work.
First, a few of my take-aways from our annual meeting on September 27, 2016.  Now that we are finishing our third year of grant-making, we are starting to see the cumulative effects of our investments and are able to launch new work.

ElderSource has now trained more than 700 caregivers on LGBT sensitivity.  This means that there are now 600 people, most of whom were not previously aware, who now think differently about how they interact with their elderly clients.  For 2017 we are expanding similar LGBT sensitivity trainings in the non-profit sector with our grant to the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida.  As these sensitivity trainings reach more people, we begin to have a more educated community on LGBT issues, and studies have shown that education and familiarity lead to acceptance of diversity.  And our grant to JASMYN starts the process of dealing with what is arguably the most pressing unmet need of LGBT youth:  homelessness.  The grant has a dual focus:  work with families to try to prevent homelessness, and study best practices for crisis housing solutions for LGBT homeless youth.  Finally, bringing national speakers to northeast Florida also contributes to increased awareness.  This year Kasey Suffredini, a transgender lawyer, provided great insights into how his organization, Freedom for All Americans, is working to increase protections for LGBT people across the US.  Casey appeared on local TV, gave two speeches, and met with government officials while here.  Your support enables all of this work!
One great development, that is also a challenge, is the LGBT Fund’s receipt of a $50,000 matching grant from Funders for LGBTQ Issues; it is wonderful to have the additional resources, and to receive the full amount we need to raise $100,000.  So your contributions are hugely important, and if you can encourage others to give that would be very helpful.  And this year as you give you can be pleased to know that for every $1,000 you give, the LGBT Fund receives an additional $500.  So this is a great way to leverage our contributions.
The other message as we end 2016 is that in addition to your financial contributions, we would love to have some of your time.  In other parts of this newsletter we detail ways you can become involved.  Speaking for myself, I find the work very rewarding, as we are making a difference.  It would be wonderful to have you join us, and we can find jobs that can match the amount of time you are able to dedicate.
Thank you very much for your support of the LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida.

We are excited to welcome Jim Gilmore, Dan Morgann, Tricia Russell, and Nyah Vanterpool to the Steering Committee for the LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida!  Nyah's term began mid-2016 and Jim, Dan & Tricia's term will begin in January 2017.  Their vision, community engagement and support of the LGBT community make them a wonderful asset for the LGBT Fund.  We look forward to 2017 – let the work begin!

We would like to thank Michael Miller, Sharòn Simmons, and Evin Willman for their service on behalf of the LGBT Fund from day one.  Each was instrumental in helping create the LGBT Fund we know today.  Their terms have ended, while the benefits of their work continue. Thank you, Michael, Sharòn and Evin!

LGBT Fund Awarded $50,000

The LGBT Community Fund for Northeast Florida is very pleased to have been awarded a $50,000 matching grant from Funders for LGBTQ Issues, as part of its Out in the South Initiative.  Out in the South is focused on increasing funding specific to LGBT issues in the South. Please note: in order to obtain the full grant we need to raise $100,000. Our members approved our using the first $25,000 of this grant to develop better data about the LGBT community and its needs in Northeast Florida, which will help inform our work as well as be useful for other policy makers and funders.

Getting The Word Out About the LGBT Fund

We are excited to announce the kickoff for year four of the LGBT Fund, and we want to invite your involvement!

Jim Gilmore and Carrie King, LGBT Fund Steering Committee Members, have agreed to co-chair our newly created Membership Committee.  This committee is designed to help strengthen and manage membership recruitment and retention.  If you are or plan to be a Member of the Fund in 2017 and have interest in joining this group, please contact Carrie at or Jim at

We are hosting several cultivation events this spring for current and prospective members and supporters. You will be receiving details about these events in the near future. Of course, we encourage that you bring friends and extend the invitation to others.
This will be an opportunity to visit with old friends, to make new ones and learn about our exciting efforts!  We will have a short report on progress of our existing grantees, and donors of the Fund will be able to share why they are so excited about the work underway, and learn more about opportunities to get involved.
In conjunction with World AIDS Day, JASMYN held a press conference last week to announce that the highly successful #AIDSFreeJAX campaign is 70% towards its $1 million goal for helping LGBT young people. JASMYN Executive Director Cindy Watson, shown here with Dr. Jay Dutton, credited 150 donors with the current progress, citing significant contributions by the Chartrand Family Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida and the Hall-Halliburton Foundation. The Delores Barr Weaver Fund is also offering a matching grant up to $500,000.

Respecting and Remembering Our Roots

Frieda Saraga, PFLAG

As part of the work of the Fund, we think it is important to highlight the contributions of individuals who have dedicated themselves to fostering  LGBT inclusivity in Northeast Florida.  Last year the LGBT Fund began an oral history project, starting with Frieda Saraga’s work creating the local PFLAG chapter.  Read this fascinating recap, and then give us a suggestion for the next installment. In your opinion, who has made an impact locally on the LGBT Community? Send your thoughts or suggestions to Christina Fleck,

Interested in being a 2017 Grantmaking Liaison?

New in 2017, any Member of the LGBT Fund will have the opportunity to participate in the grantmaking process by acting as part of a Liaison Team

Each organization applying for a grant will have a Liaison Team assigned to review the proposal, make recommendations to the Steering Committee and if approved, follow the progress of the grant through its duration. Each team will have a lead liaison, who serves on the Steering Committee to coordinate these efforts. (See sidebar for details.) These teams will be critically important in providing information to the Steering Committee to assist with its decision making.

If you are interested in becoming a liaison, please contact Glenn Miller, Chair of the Grantmaking Teams for 2017. You can reach him at
For additional information, please contact Christina Fleck, or (904) 356-4483.
