A Big Island man has been indicted on several charges stemming from an Oct. 14 incident in Puna.
The Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney announced Friday that 45 year-old Jarret Kaneshiro was charged with second-degree attempted murder, ownership or possession of firearms prohibited, carrying or use of firearm in the commission of a separate felony, carrying or possessing a loaded firearm on a highway, place to keep pistol or revolver and first-degree criminal trespass.

The Hawai’i Police Department says Sofefina Paulino-Ngata was last seen at 7 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of Kapiʻolani Street in Hilo. She is described as Polynesian, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds, with a dark complexion, straight shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes.

The Hawai‘i Police Department says the black 2021 Polaris Sportsman 570 Ultimate Trail ATV, with blue accents, was removed sometime between the evening hours of Oct. 18 and the morning of Oct. 19 from a residence on Kukuihaele Road in Honoka‘a.

Two East Hawai‘i residents face multiple charges in connection with an alleged burglary in West Hawai‘i.
The incident was reported at 3 p.m. Sunday at a residence in the 73-1000 block of Ahulani Street of Kailua-Kona. Responding Hawai‘i Police Department officers determined that earlier in the day unknown suspects stole multiple items, including electronic items and credit cards.

Big Island police are investigating after a 38-year-old Kailua-Kona man was allegedly assaulted and robbed.
Officers responding to a report of an assault at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hale Halawai Park in Kailua-Kona determined that the victim was near the beach area fronting the park’s pavilion when he was confronted by two unknown men.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is undergoing a Draft Environmental Assessment on its proposal to relocate the school’s 28-inch educational telescope from the summit of Maunakea to Hale Pōhaku. The deadline to provide feedback on the assessment is Oct. 24.
The UH Hilo teaching telescope now is undergoing decommissioning at the summit. It is scheduled for completion in 2023.
