UH to Digitize 55K Rare, Endangered Native Plant Specimens

A team led by a University of Hawaiʻi professor is digitizing and cataloging more than 55,000 plant specimens, many of which are extinct, to preserve and improve access to one of the oldest collections of plants from around the Pacific.

“Our goal for the project is to get all 55,000 plant specimens digitized for the whole world to see and facilitate research on Hawaiian plants across the globe,” UH-Mānoa School of Life Sciences assistant professor Karolina Heyduk said in a press release. “The herbarium represents a really unique collection that is used by both researchers and also used in classes and teaching on campus.”

Talk Story With Kumu Hula Etua Lopes And Haumana Lacey Deniz

Hula is all about relationships, and an upcoming event hosted by a Big Island nonprofit will highlight the special bond between a kumu and his haumana.

Laʻiʻōpua 2020 is bringing together celebrated Kona kumu hula Etua Lopes and one of his haumana, former Miss Kona Coffee and television personality Lacy Deniz, for a talk-story session about hula from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the organization’s headquarters located at 74-5210 Keanalehu Drive in Kealakehe.

Kanoelehua/Kekūanaōʻa Intersection in Hilo Open Again Following Traffic Accident

Update: Police reported at 12:20 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, that the intersection of Kanoelehua Avenue and Kekūanaōʻa Street in Hilo is open again. They thanked the public for its patience. 

Original story: Big Island police are advising motorists to avoid the intersection of Kanoelehua Avenue and Kekūanaōʻa Street in Hilo for the next several hours because of a traffic accident.

PGV to Host Community Meeting About Pending EIS Preparation Notice

Puna community members will have the opportunity this week to comment about an environmental impact statement preparation notice being prepared by Puna Geothermal Venture.

PGV will host a community meeting in regard to the EIS preparation notice from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility located at 15-2906 Pāhoa Village Road. The meeting will provide background information and an opportunity for public comment.
