Keep the music going in 2021!

Twenty-seven years ago, JazzWorks’ first 2-Day Weekend Workshop hosted a small, but enthusiastic group of 21 adult community jazz musicians and 4 inspired faculty, It was an intensive jazz education experience, in a setting away from day-to-day distractions – a sharing of techniques, ideas and influences and a chance to build new performing alliances – all based in the jazz art form which we love.

Over nearly three decades, the JazzWorks organization has developed exponentially and our mission has grown to include a wide range  of programming.  Our offerings now include an expanded Jazz Camp and Composers’ Symposium, Monthly Jam Sessions and Open Mic Nights, Jazz in the Schools, Mid-year Workshops and our JazzWorks Presents Concerts.  As our programming has grown, so has our community, with broader demographic outreach. JazzWorks has become  a supportive “Jazz family” of cherished musical and personal relationships.

This past year has challenged all of us in many ways.  COVID-19 has turned much of our world upside down.  Jazz Camp, Vocal Open Mic Nights, Jams Sessions – have all been suspended. JazzWorks saw well over 50% of expected annual revenues evaporate in March.

Despite that heavy shock, our staff and volunteers have been working to keep JazzWorks alive – and delivering the kinds of jazz experiences our Friends and other participants have said they want. We’ve moved with technological advances to create online programming, offering workshops and intensive study programs with some of the top teaching professionals in the business. We’ve also recreated an online version of our Vocal Open Mic Night and Jazz in the Schools – and we are planning for an in person  return to CAMMAC for our Composers’ Symposium and Jazz Camp August 23- 29, 2021.

With the unexpected “experience” gained in 2020, we expect JazzWorks to be even better once the pandemic lifts. We can’t wait for the music to be live again. Joy!

And now, we need your help. Jazzworks has always lived on a lean budget, but 2020 has been so much leaner than expected.  We have survived, but barely. To make those plans for 2021 and beyond come alive, we need to establish a good financial base, retain our dedicated staff, put down deposits on Camp, and match funds from generous program sponsors like the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Community Foundation.

Here are some comments from happy JazzWorks Campers/Participants:

Jazz Camp never fails to inspire me to try harder to improve.

I made the decision several years ago that I will never skip camp. It's a highlight of my whole year - time to focus on music I love with people who love it as much as I do, in a beautiful place. There is so much joy, support, learning and beauty in those few days, it's totally addictive.

They were really cool guys and often music students are not perceived as the coolest people in school…These two gentlemen were able to get almost every single person in the (high school) band to improvise! That in itself is a major accomplishment!

Beautiful presentation – her knowledge, expertise and understanding of music was completely evident. She is an amazing singer and at the same time, very articulate about the meaning, history and experience of jazz.

Such accomplished, committed and caring faculty. You have chosen some of Canada’s most accomplished and creative jazz musicians

Thank you to everyone - Jazzworks Jazz Camp is a jewel!

As you consider your year-end gifts, please keep all those memories of wonderful past programs in mind and help us create even more in the future.  Please give as generously as you are able, to help bring back JazzWorks, stronger than ever.
