Weekly Spotlight

Crummer Rollins Venture Plan Competition this week - and odd newspaper article about it last week

The Crummer Rollins Venture Plan Competition, Central Florida’s largest pitch competition, is this Thursday evening at 5:30 pm at the Bush Auditorium on the Rollins College campus in Winter Park.  The finalists pitching for a share of $50,000 in cash and additional services are: AireHealth– developing a connected-portable nebulizer for the delivery of medication to the lungs for asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis patients, Omnimodal- providing cities with a comprehensive real-time transit data platform, Yaupon Brothers American Tea - creating a tea using the Yaupon Holly, a Florida native plant, and Xmdocs- providing real-time tracking and automation for shippers with a collaborative platform.  You can register to attend here.  I’ll be there - say hello if you see me!

Speaking of Xmdocs.  News about this event was rather odd in the Orlando Sentinel last week.  Their headline was “Finalist for $100,000 business plan competition has dummy text, dead links on website.” – referring to Xmdocs.  I assume this was deemed news and a way to grab Orlando Sentinel readers’ attention.  But was it news?  In the body of the story is this statement about a finalist lacking a website - “Competition officials say that is because the competition does not require a website and accepts applications from any business, even those in their very early stages”.  No news there. I spoke with Xmdocs Founder and CEO Jonathan Keating last week and he told me they had been in stealth mode prior to the going public with the competition.  I told him that Luminar Technologies raised $36M with no website and so he was in good company!

Digital Orlando 2019 in two weeks - Panel on "Building Orlando's Tech & Innovation Economy"

Digital Orlando is a summit organized by David Glass that brings together leaders from across Orlando’s tech and innovation ecosystem to discuss the impact and future of the region’s tech industry.  Further information and registration here.

I'm honored to be participating as one of the panelists on the "Building Orlando's Tech & Innovation Economy" panel moderated by Habeel Gazi, Director of Life Sciences, Orlando Economic Partnership. Fellow panelists include Carol Ann Logue, Office of Innovation & Partnerships, UCF, Ben Patz, Managing General Partner, DeepWork Capital, and David Glass, Founder & Producer, OrlandoiX. I'm looking forward to a forthright discussion about where we are, where we aspire to be, and how we are going to get there.
